Blazing fast times. School records. State Medals.

All of these things were in play for the Chambersburg’s boys swimming team, which competed to its best-ever finish at last week’s PIAA Class 3A Swimming Championships, held at Bucknell University.

The Trojans piled up 73 points to finish eighth in the state and were led by the efforts of senior Derek Estep. The University of Delaware recruit placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:39.16) and seventh in the 100 butterfly (50.25), while also anchoring Chambersburg’s 200 freestyle relay squad to a sixth-place finish with a school-record time of 1:25.28. Other members of Chambersburg’s relay team include Alex Kaczmark, Amir Tasker, and Cristian Pong.

Waynesboro also brought home a girls 3A state medalist in Eve Phillips, who captured a fifth-place finish in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.21.

Moving from the pool to the hardwood floor, basketball season is officially over as the final two teams from the Local.News area bid their respective farewells in the state playoffs. Chambersburg bowed out in the second round of the PIAA Class 6A Championships with a 61-46 loss to Parkland, while Smithsburg suffered a 75-59 loss to Edmondson-Westside in the MPSSAA Class 1A semifinals.

Last week’s lovely weather allowed the outdoor sports season to begin without a hitch, and because of it, Chambersburg’s boys tennis team is off to a 2-0 start this spring after wins over Central Dauphin East and Northern York.

Below is a sport-by-sport look at how teams in the Local.News coverage area performed last week:
