“Let’s keep it going” say two women involved in the local Bras for A Cause campaign.

Donations, which include financial contributions and bras, will be accepted through Oct. 31 and support Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance (CVBCA). The cash donations are used to assist patients undergoing treatment for breast cancer who live in Franklin County.

Rhonda McFarland, who heads up the effort along with Marj Cober, said the campaign is an opportunity to raise awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, observed in October.

“The support this fundraiser provides for patients and their families is incredibly valuable,” offered Carol MacDougall, of Concord, Massachusetts, and formerly of Waynesboro, who started the campaign in 2016 with McFarland. “In addition, the donation of bras fulfills a unique and very real need within the community,” added MacDougall, a 23-year breast cancer survivor. “Even though I’ve moved, I continue to support this fundraiser with cash donations and bras.”

“We have sponsors who pledge $1 for every bra donated,” according to McFarland. “The money we raise is used to provide gas and food cards and help with energy bills, among other services. The bras we collect go to Waynesboro Human Services and Grace’s Free Closet in Greencastle for distribution,” she added.

“In 2022, we were able to personally take care of close to 100 newly diagnosed women and approve mammography services for 93 others,” noted Samantha Logsdon, CEO/president of CVBCA. “At least two women were diagnosed through our free program, and we were able to get them the necessary treatment. With your help, ‘Together We Can Make a Difference,’” she added.

Collection sites for bras include: Waynesboro YMCA, Savage Pharmacy and New Reflections Hair Salon of Waynesboro, Stampin’ Up with Jody Brechbill in Duffield, Here’s Looking at You and Rhonda Brake Shreiner Women’s Center, both of Chambersburg, and Zeger Dental Clinic of Greencastle.

Financial contributions may be sent to Cumberland Valley Breast Care Alliance at 1601 Mountain Road, Suite 101, Mercersburg, PA 17236, with Bras for a Cause on the memo line.
