WAYNESBORO- The Rotary Club of Waynesboro submitted the following club news:

Last Meeting’s Program (5.7.24 bulletin)

Matthew Gordon, a member of the Waynesboro Area School District police force, offered an overview of safety and security procedures in the district. Matthew, an Air Force veteran and former member of the Pennsylvania State Police, is responsible for the high school. Another officer handles the middle school, and a third is in training to cover the elementary schools. The school force works with local police, juvenile probation officers and mental health counselors to ensure the safety and health of students. There are exterior and interior cameras at the schools, and all schools have secure vestibule areas. The district also has several metal detectors. There are threat assessment teams at all schools to evaluate the level of threats received. Drug dogs periodically check the schools, and exterior doors are checked on a regular basis. Matthew said his responsibilities include investigations of incidents, conducting safety drills, professional development, mentoring, home visits and court appearances. Negative social media interactions among students are a big problem as are waiting times for counseling help and family dysfunction.
