Last Meeting’s Program (4.16.24 bulletin)

Rotary member Frank Conway gave an entertaining classification talk on his life experiences. Frank grew up in Bloomfield, N.J., where he said he developed a lifelong interest in “tinkering” — taking things apart and putting them together. After graduating from high school in 1966, he went to Bloomfield College for two years. A low draft number led to him joining the Army in 1969. That led to him being assigned to the White House Communications Agency with eventual top secret clearance. He then was assigned to Camp David, where he operated manual switchboards and worked with communications equipment that seems antiquated today. Frank served five presidents, from Nixon to George H.W. Bush. He traveled to 49 states and 22 countries and retired as the senior NCO of the Camp David Communications Detachment. He then went to work in the claims office of State Farm Insurance in Frederick, Md. for 18 years and in part-time jobs with the Edward Jones investment firm. He has been active on the boards of the Antietam Watershed Association and Waynesboro Historical Society. He enjoys woodworking as a hobby.
