HERSHEY – Homecoming 2024 was a good night to be a Lower Dauphin Falcon. And Gerald Sanders, who was crowned Homecoming king at halftime at Hersheypark Stadium, earned the limelight as Lower Dauphin won its third consecutive game in a 31-0 romp over a lackluster Waynesboro Indians team on Friday, Oct. 18. Waynesboro will finally come home when the Indians host Hershey in the regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 25 and a chance to salvage a 5-5 season after playoff hopes were dashed following consecutive losses. It might as well have been Friday the 13th for the Tribe, which…

WAYNESBORO – Give Waynesboro Area Senior High School senior Tyler Fortney a round of applause. Although he didn’t qualify beyond the PIAA District 3-AAA tournament held last week at Honey Run Golf Course, the senior golfer was ultra-consistent during the regular season and came very close to winning the Mid-Penn Conference championship at Dauphin Highlands in Harrisburg. Fortney was the alpha golfer during the Mid-Penn Colonial Division meets. He finished first overall in six of seven meets. He placed second behind Northern’s Logan White with a 75 in the third match. He started the season with a 77, good enough…

LEWISTOWN – When the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity football team studies the film of its 20-14 Mid-Penn Keystone Division loss to Mifflin County High School, they’ll point out multiple missed opportunities, the same story as the Indians’ 30-27 defeat against Northern York High School. But thinking too much about back-so-back losses won’t be good for the soul, leaving the team and the coaching staff (with two sets of brothers serving as assistant coaches) to learn from mistakes so Waynesboro doesn’t slip up this week against a very competitive Mechanicsburg High School team on Friday in Mechanicsburg. The Wildcats…

WAYNESBORO – After defeating Palmyra a week ago, Waynesboro knew what was coming on Friday against varsity football rival Northern York. “Stop the run,” said ‘Boro linebacker Tank Benedict and head coach Mark Saunders. They were both right. But the Indians, try as they did, didn’t have a defensive scheme to stop the tandem of running back Gabe Johnson and quarterback Grady Bonin. Johnson rushed for 146 yards and Bonin made his way for 125 yards as the Polar Bears edged a determined Waynesboro 30-27 in a Mid-Penn Keystone Division on Homecoming at Buchanan Automotive Stadium on a drizzly Friday…

PALMYRA – At a glance, it wouldn’t seem like a 47-14 final score qualifies as a rally. But it was. Waynesboro trailed Palmyra 14-12 early in the second quarter, leaving the Indians in another déjà vu moment. The previous week, Waynesboro fell behind Red Land 7-0 but kicked into a different gear and left with a 23-13 win. The potential for a slippery slope scenario against a team the Tribe should have won did not manifest itself. For the second week in a row, head coach Mark Saunders’ team got out of its own way and scored the final 35…

CAMP HILL – It took a while for Waynesboro to shake itself out of an early-game slumber, but when Red Land’s Brady Seyler rambled 65 yards for the game’s first touchdown, the Indians took notice that the Patriots might have entered the game with an 0-3 record. Still, they wouldn’t lay down without a fight. Waynesboro had an answer for Red Land’s touchdown. Alex Torbica kicked a 29-yard field goal to give the Tribe a 10-7 lead at halftime, and Waynesboro pushed across two more scores to come away with a 23-13 varsity football victory. Quarterback Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt and running…

CHAMBERSBURG – The Northern Polar Bears ran its record to 33-3 on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Chambersburg Country Club, finishing the 18-hole Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity golf meet with a 323. The win gives Northern a five-match lead over second-place Shippensburg (28-8), which scored a 333. Greencastle-Antrim was third with 343, edging James Buchanan in a tiebreaker. Waynesboro (20-16) placed fifth with 348. Gettysburg and Big Spring closed out the scoring. Waynesboro’s Tyler Fortney has been the standard among league golfers. While the team is having a challenging season under long-time coach Ryan Henderson, Fortney (a senior) was again the…

CARLISLE – Scores were high from top to bottom in the most recent Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity golf match held at Eagles Crossing. And, as has been the case for the entire season, Waynesboro’s Tyler Fortney entered the clubhouse with the best overall score. Fortney, the anchor for head coach Ryan Henderson’s squad, is turning in a memorable senior season. He shot 73 to lead Waynesboro to a 5-1 record on Wednesday, Sept. 4. It’s taking a while for the other three scorers to establish the needed consistency to translate into a run at a division championship. Northern continues to…

WAYNESBORO – If Waynesboro could change one thing about Friday’s 28-21 loss to Shippensburg at Buchanan Automotive Stadium, it would be to punt the ball with time running down in the second quarter. Instead, the Indians tried to pull a rabbit out of a hat and fake the punt. It didn’t work, and the Greyhounds marched down the field for a touchdown. Instead of trailing 14-7 at halftime with Waynesboro receiving the second-half kickoff, Shippensburg wailed off the field with the score 14-13. It didn’t matter, at least by game’s end, that the extra point was no good. The momentum…

FAIRFIELD – The Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity golf match was in Adams County this past Thursday, Sept. 29, as Gettysburg was the host team at Gettysburg National Golf Course. Nobody could keep up with Shippensburg. The Greyhounds had three of its four scorers place in the overall top five as Shippensburg coasted to an 18-stroke victory over runner-up Northern. It was the Polar Bears’ first loss of the season. Northern still owns a comfortable lead in the division but is no longer undefeated. The 23-1 Bears are six matches ahead of second-place Shippensburg (17-7). Gettysburg placed third and is 16-8.…
