WAYNESBORO- The Rotary Club of Waynesboro submitted the following club news:

Last Meeting’s Program_(4.9.24 bulletin)

Todd Toth, a former teacher and coach in the Waynesboro Area School District, discussed his current work as a trainer with the GLOBE project at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. GLOBE stands for Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment. It provides environmental education programs in 127 countries and more than 41,000 schools, Todd said. More than 271,000 volunteer observers worldwide take scientific measurements and report their data to Goddard. Todd said the primary job at Goddard is to build satellites. He discussed some of the processes used to test the satellites for reliability and durability. Goddard’s most recent satellite launch was PACE, designed to monitor the health of the oceans. Presently, there are more than 9,000 active satellites and 3,000 inactive ones “saturating” the area around Earth, Todd said. He also discussed the solar eclipse coming April 8, which he said would be a 92 percent eclipse and would be observable in Waynesboro from 2:06 to 4:33 p.m. He planned to participate in an eclipse watch party hosted by The Institute at Waynesboro Area Senior High School Buchanan Auto Stadium
