A Waynesboro woman’s love of flowers has bloomed into a new business.

“I have always had a passion for flowers, and I want others to feel as happy as I do when I’m around them,” said Carlene Willhide, owner of The Potting Shed & Beyond.

Initially, Willhide will sell pre-potted annual flowers, hanging baskets, succulent and air plant arrangements, terrariums and individual flowers for the do-it-yourselfers. Also, a lover of stained glass, dogs and the beach, Willhide will incorporate those elements in other products she plans to offer.

Local residents will have the opportunity to peruse her wares a number of times in Waynesboro starting in May. Events are set for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 3, 4, 17 and 18 at 372 Strickler Ave.; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 10 and 11, and 9 a.m. to noon May 12 at 11475 Buchanan Trail East; and 8:30 a.m. to noon June 1 and 8 at the Main Street Farmers Market, 25 E. Main St.

At the Buchanan Trail East location on May 10, 11 and 12, Willhide will feature a “Faux Much Fun” section with faux plants. “These are for people who say they don’t have a green thumb. They look real, they are beautiful and there is no maintenance,” she added.

As the business expands, Willhide plans to offer dog treats and apparel, crafting workshops and stained-glass items. Also, if people want her to come to their home or bring their containers to her to plant, that service will be offered.

Willhide showcases her artistic flair in the potting shed built by her husband, Mike, at their home. “I dreamed about having one for many years and collected pieces such as stained and leaded glass windows, antiques and ‘pretty things’ along the way. I feel inspired when I’m in my shed and just sitting in it makes me feel good with a sense of calm.”

Willhide said she has had “a ton of support” since creating a business Facebook page. “A lot of people know me,” said the lifelong Waynesboro resident and former executive director of the Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce. “I love people and enjoy helping them. I will do everything I can to make it a great experience for them.”

Since starting the business, Willhide already has contributed her creations to a number of local organizations holding benefits.
