Area residents have the opportunity to own a quilt crafted especially to  commemorate the 150th anniversary of Green Hill Cemetery.

Kim Shockey of Waynesboro created the quilt as part of the scheduled events planned in honor of the celebration.

“This is something I love to do,” offered Shockey, who donated the quilt, which will be raffled off during the Autumn Foliage Scavenger Hunt Party set for 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 15, at the cemetery. Tickets, $5 each or 5 for $20, are available at the cemetery office at 953 S. Potomac St., or by calling 717-658-6789 or 717-762-2759. Admission is free and there will be light refreshments. All proceeds benefit the Green Hill Cemetery Association.

The fall party will feature scavenger hunts for children ages 4 to 8 with a map to guide participants, and one for those 9 and older that includes some clues to help participants answer the questions as they walk or drive through the cemetery. Completed entries will be eligible for prizes donated by local businesses (you do not need to be present to win).

About the quilt

The 92.5- by 92.5-inch quilt is made out of Civil War reproduction fabric, and is machine pieced, machine quilted and hand binded.

Shockey, who has been quilting for more than seven years, started crafting as a teenager. “I began with cross stitching … I like to do crafts. When I see something I like to figure out how it’s done. I view tutorials and try it.

Shockey is most fond of making memory quilts. “It gives me the greatest joy, whether it’s making one in memory of someone who’s passed or using sports T-shirts from someone’s childhood as a graduation present. It’s nice to see those memories made.”

The first event of the cemetery’s sesquicentennial observance was a community Easter sunrise service April 9, followed by Cocktails in the Cemetery: A Summer Solstice Observance June 21.
