Socrates Café

Thursday, August 17

What is Socrates Café? It’s a gathering where people thoughtfully exchange ideas about existential/philosophical questions, with maximum respect for others’ opinions. The library’s Socrates Café is only one of hundreds around the world.

Step Back In Time: Life in Our County With Hank Hayseed (Virtual)

Join us as we share personal accounts and handed down stories from times gone by in and around Waynesboro. This month we will share parts of “Life in Our County With Hank Hayseed” edited by Edward V. Koterba. These stories were taken from articles in the Record Herald prior to June 1952.

Hooks & Needles: Making a Sunflower Coaster

Come join us for our Hooks & Needles Program at the library. Our program will give you the option of bringing with you what you are working on and joining in our group that talks about their current projects and shares ideas and encouragement. This is a great place to share your ideas or to learn some new stitching skills. You can also participate in our Making A Sunflower Coaster class. If you choose to do this, bring along a ball of brown yarn, a ball of yellow yarn, and either an F, G or H hook.

Anime Club

Teens ages 12-18, do you love to watch anime, read manga, and even draw characters? Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library invites you to join us for a watch party, with anime movie selected by club members. Anime Club is a regular program at the library on 1st & 3rd Wednesdays. We read & discuss our favorite / least favorite manga, choose anime shows & movies to watch together, and do various games, crafts, & other activities related to Japanese culture. This is the last Anime Club of the summer; fall dates TBA. Want to co-lead a club meeting? See Miss Gina at the library.

MakerSpace Days

This summer Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library invites teens & preteens ages 10-18 to join us on 1st Wednesdays for a series of activities in the library’s MakerSpace, with guest teacher Julie Diaz. The August activity is, “Siege Engines: Head back in time to build your own catapult and storm the castle!” This is our last MakerSpace Days event of the summer; fall dates & themes TBA. Join Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library in Martha’s Garden (the library’s back yard) for two special rock-painting projects: 1) We’ll work together to paint one large rock, as an installation in the library’s garden. 2) Each participant will also get to paint a small rock, with the option to either take it home with them, OR participate in the W-Boro PA Rox project (see their Facebook page for more info if you are interested). Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library hosts Teen Game Night via Discord. Teens ages 13-18, do you have a smartphone, tablet, PC, and/or console that you play games on? Do you have online games to play & no one to play with? Looking for a game to play but don’t know where to start? Join us on our AHMFL Teen Discord to see what games are happening! We play online multiplayer games such as Among Us, Jackbox, Unfortunate Spacemen, Gartic Phone, Minecraft, and more. Put in your vote for what you want to play! To join us, you’ll need to be a member of AHMFL’s Teen Discord, since this is how we meet up, choose games, & share codes to access our game lobbies. To become a member, teens must return a permission slip signed by a parent/guardian. Please contact AHMFL Teen Librarian Miss Gina at (717) 762-3335 to request a slip. Unfortunately, Discord has a strict age 13+ policy, so we direct 12-yr-old patrons to try our in-person Game Nights instead, until they turn 13. Online Teen Game Nights are a regular program on alternating Tuesdays, 5:45-6:45 PM.

Attention kids between the ages of 9-11… do you like to read and share your ideas? Join us for our Children’s Book Club which meets on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. This month’s book selection is The Giver by Lois Lowry. This is the 1st book in a 4-part series about a boy named Jonah who lives in a community where everything is controlled. As he reaches his 12th birthday, he will be assigned a role in the community. Join us as we discuss what role he is given and why Jonah was selected for this very unique role in his society.
