WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens varsity basketball team tips off the 2022-23 season on Friday at the Franklin County vs. Everyone Tip-Off Tournament at Chambersburg High School.
Head coach Heidi Shaull is in her fourth season at the post, and she is looking forward to another season of growth and, perhaps, more wins.
“This group has been committed to our program and getting better,” Shaull said of her squad, which consists of four seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and a freshman. “This group has learned how to persevere through difficult times and never give up. They always come ready to battle. Those are key factors that will help them to be successful in life.”
Key departures from last season’s team are Hope Freels, Becca Cordell and Ella Lowry.
“I’m looking to Za’Mariah Diggs, Gracie French, Addie Shaull and Genesis Alvarez to fill their departure,” Shaull said.
The Maidens have four returning starters on the roster, including three seniors: Slaydon Fisher, Kiera Pryor and Cameron Witte.
“They are all three-year starters,” said Shaull. “I’m looking to the seniors to provide leadership and energy for our team.”
Sophomore Nikki Davis is the other returning starter. Davis received honorable mention on the Mid-Penn Colonial Division Alil-Star Team.
“We have a strong understanding of our offense,” Shaul said. “It’s the most returning varsity experience that we’ve had in four seasons.”
Shaull is confident the team can be competitive and continue to improve its record. She added that the Maidens need to be more consistent in scoring.
“Last year we got the shots off but struggled to score consistently,” she said. “To be in games and win, we need to get the ball in the basket. We also need to continue to decrease the number of errors.”
