It was a close call for the Waynesboro Indians varsity baseball team, but a victory on Wednesday against Chambersburg proved to be the boost they needed to qualify for the District 3-5A playoffs.

Waynesboro (12-6), which entered the game ranked 17th (and out of the 16-team field), defeated Class 6A Chambersburg, 3-0 and checked in at 13th in the final power rating.

The Tribe took care of 6A Harrisburg, 17-2, last Friday but its chance of making the postseason hinged on Wednesday’s game at Chambersburg.

Waynesboro will play a first-round game at fourth-seed Ephrata (14-6) on Monday, May 23. First pitch from War Memorial Field is 5:30 p.m.

The Waynesboro Maidens softball team had to wait a little longer Thursday night for the final power rating to be tabulated and the District 3-5A playoff bracket to be put together.

After being ranked as high as eighth earlier in the season, Waynesboro (12-7) will settle for the 16th and final seed.

The Maidens will play at top-seed Exeter Township (16-4), which played in the Berks County League, on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Tickets for baseball and softball games are $6.
