CHAMBERSBURG – The Franklin County Commissioners have proclaimed April 10-14, 2023, to be Reentry Week in Franklin County and are encouraging residents to support individuals who are returning to their communities after being released from jail.
Individuals leaving incarceration can face a complex transition as they reenter society, often encountering hurdles regarding employment, housing, transportation, substance abuse treatment and mental health care. Locally, the Franklin Together Reentry Coalition strives to reduce stigma, bias and cultural stereotypes while working to engage the community to create a system of care that empowers and supports justice-involved individuals and their families in achieving success. Franklin Together offers peer groups, supportive services and other resources to assist those returning from incarceration, reduce recidivism and improve public safety.
“The successful reentry of formerly incarcerated individuals strengthens families and ultimately benefits communities,” said Franklin County Commissioner Dave Keller. “It’s a tough transition, so it’s important for us to help them re-connect with their families, employers, schools, faith-based organizations, non-profits, and behavioral healthcare providers to help make that transition as successful as possible.”
By recognizing April 10-14, 2023, as Reentry Week in Franklin County, the commissioners are calling upon residents to support these reintegration efforts and to understand that these ex-offenders can become contributing members within Franklin County communities.
The commissioners’ proclamation presentation is one of several events Franklin Together has coordinated to encourage the community to get involved in Reentry Week. For a full list of events and initiatives, visit the Franklin Together Facebook page, www.facebook.com/FranklinTogether.
