Retired Col. Larry R. Tinberg, 85, of St. Thomas, PA, passed away Saturday, July 27, 2024, in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born June 14, 1939, in Paxton, IL, he was the son of the late Grant E. and Evelyn (Kietzman) Tinberg.

Larry was a graduate of Paxton High School. He later went on to obtain his bachelor’s degree in accountancy from the University of Illinois and his master’s degree in public administration from Shippensburg University. He served with the United States Army for 30 years, retiring in 1992. He was a field artillery officer, serving as a battery commander, a battalion commander, and holding positions on the Army Staff and the Office of The Secretary of Defense.

He was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chambersburg. He enjoyed golfing, listening to music, and the Chicago Cubs. He was an avid Washington Capitals Hockey fan and loved watching them play. Larry was also a dog lover and adopted a number of dogs throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Judith (Hibbs) Tinberg whom he married August 2, 1964; two daughters, Heather Duffett and her husband David of Manassas, VA, and Heidi Demasi of Williamsburg, VA; five grandchildren, John Demasi, Elizabeth Demasi, Margaret Demasi, Nicholas Duffett, and Matthew Duffett; and two great-grandchildren, Nina and Alexander Boutell. 

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 431 Philadelphia Ave, Chambersburg, PA 17201 with Pastor Barbara Barry officiating. Arrangements by the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center.

The family will receive friends following the service, with refreshments.

Interment at Arlington National Cemetery will take place at a later date.
