WAYNESBORO – If Waynesboro could change one thing about Friday’s 28-21 loss to Shippensburg at Buchanan Automotive Stadium, it would be to punt the ball with time running down in the second quarter. Instead, the Indians tried to pull a rabbit out of a hat and fake the punt. It didn’t work, and the Greyhounds marched down the field for a touchdown. Instead of trailing 14-7 at halftime with Waynesboro receiving the second-half kickoff, Shippensburg wailed off the field with the score 14-13. It didn’t matter, at least by game’s end, that the extra point was no good. The momentum…

FAIRFIELD – The Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity golf match was in Adams County this past Thursday, Sept. 29, as Gettysburg was the host team at Gettysburg National Golf Course. Nobody could keep up with Shippensburg. The Greyhounds had three of its four scorers place in the overall top five as Shippensburg coasted to an 18-stroke victory over runner-up Northern. It was the Polar Bears’ first loss of the season. Northern still owns a comfortable lead in the division but is no longer undefeated. The 23-1 Bears are six matches ahead of second-place Shippensburg (17-7). Gettysburg placed third and is 16-8.…
WAYNESBORO – The objective in football is to score more points than your opponent. And when the opponent is Gettysburg, you will have to score a lot of them. There was good news and really good news coming out of the Charles A. “Rip” Engle Sports Complex on Friday night. The good news is that Waynesboro put up 33 points on the Warriors. The really good news is that the Tribe held Gettysburg to 14 points before the Warriors scored a late touchdown to make the final score 33-21. What a game it was for junior quarterback Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt. He…
WAYNESBORO – After Waynesboro relinquished a double-digit lead to Greencastle-Antrim on Friday night, it appeared that the Indians – and their enthusiastic and loud student section – were going to start the high school football season with an L. The game clock showed 1:13 to play. Waynesboro started its final possession of the game at its 17-yard line. The Tribe had to score a touchdown; they trailed 27-23. Waynesboro had two time-outs, and they would need both. On first down, it turns out that the hook-and-lateral play worked to perfection. Calvin Myers caught the hook, and Nathan Nolan took the…
WAYNESBORO – A new season has dawned for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity football team. And with it comes a new division for the Indians. During the offseason, the Mid-Penn Conference made a radical realignment when it devised two 10-team divisions (Commonwealth and Keystone) along with the Colonial and Capital divisions. Consequently, Waynesboro will play only one non-division game, and that’s the season opener at home against Greencastle-Antrim on Friday at 7 p.m. Waynesboro was moved from the Colonial Division to the Keystone Division. That means some challenges for game plans and scouting. But, come game time, it…

Northern’s Logan White was the medalist. He…

It’s never too early to talk about football. NFL training camps open later this week, and major college football conferences are hosting their pre-season media events. There are several directions one could take when discussing the current climate in college (and professional) football, but ‘tis better to err on the side of fun and look at the best college football matchups by week. For starters, true blue fans must be glad that the Jim Harbaugh chapter is finally closed at Michigan. The former Wolverines quarterback turned college coach then NFL coach and back to college again was a big distraction.…
WAYNESBORO – Alyssa Vulgamott has become quite the bowler. It helps that she comes from a family of bowlers. Her father, David, her mother Stephanie, and her grandfather Bill Eyler all had a hand in Alyssa’s development in the sport. So did Chris Thompson at Nellie Fox Lanes in Chambersburg. Not to mention, her grandmother Ginny McBeth coached youth teams while Alyssa was growing up. Now 14 years old and getting ready to enter high school in Waynesboro, Alyssa is waiting for the new season of the Pennsylvania Junior Bowlers Tournament circuit to begin in August. Until then, she bowls…
