WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys and girls cross country teams hosted a tri-meet against Greencastle-Antrim and West Perry on a scorching Tuesday afternoon. The Waynesboro boys team finished the 3.1-mile course that sliced through iconic Renfrew Park with its top five runners in the top nine. A week after defeating Spring Grove 21-3 in the 2023 season opener, head coach Mark Saunders and Company hosted Hershey in Week 2 on a warm and clear Friday night at Buchanan Automotive Stadium. Waynesboro’s top four golfers – Kellan Smith, Tyler Fortney, Stone Taylor and Andrew Soffe – combined to finish with a score of 327. Northern, who has beaten Waynesboro twice this season and entered Tuesday’s Mid-Penn Colonial Division match with a one-match lead in the standings, finished eight strokes behind, finishing with 335. WAYNESBORO – Mark Saunders might just feel like the luckiest man alive. Not just to be a head coach, but to be alive. Saunders, a native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and married to Waynesboro Area Senior High School alumnus and current varsity girls’ volleyball head coach, overcame Non-hodgkin’s lymphoma. Five years and intensive chemotherapy and physical rehabilitation later and Saunders is in a happier place. “I really feel fortunate,” said Saunders, the new head football coach at WASHS. LOOKING BACK. The legacy that Tom Robinson left on the Waynesboro community can not be overstated. Robinson died in 2014 after battling cancer. He coached Waynesboro American Legion Post 15 for 40 years (from 1975 to 2014). Robinson played in the Waynesboro Youth League for four years and Pony League for two more. Three years of high school varsity baseball came at the same time Robinson played for Waynesboro American Legion Post 15, from 1961 to 1963.
