Waynesboro Indians win fourth straight game

It’s been an up-and-down season for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys’ varsity basketball team.

Lately, it’s been up.

On Friday, Waynesboro built an early lead and then held off a Gettysburg rally for a 57-52 Mid-Penn Colonial Division victory.

On Tuesday, Waynesboro overcame a first-half deficit and defeated James Buchanan, 51-35, in a divisional contest in Mercersburg.

The Tribe (7-9) have won five of the last five games, with the loss coming at home against Greencastle-Antrim.

Waynesboro led 17-8 against the Warriors and took a 29-19 lead into the halftime intermission. The lead was 42-31 after three quarters when Gettysburg – behind the scoring of Josh Herr (33 points) – cut into the deficit but ran out of time.

For the Indians, Alex Torbica and Farin Parks combined to score 27 points, with Torbica finishing with 14 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds, while Parks had six boards. Parks led the team with seven assists.

Kellan Smith and Grant Thompson each tallied eight points for the winners.

Against James Buchanan, Waynesboro led 9-7 after the first quarter but stumbled a bit in the second stanza and trailed at halftime 24-19.

But the Indians came to play in the final 16 minutes and outscored the Rockets 16-5 in the third quarter and 16-6 in the fourth period.

Torbica turned in a double-double in the game. The forward scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed 16 rebounds (eight each on offense and defense). Not to be outdone, teammate Parks, a 6-foot-4 guard who plays like a guard and forward, scored 12 points and had 11 boards.

Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt tallied 10 points for the Indians.

Waynesboro’s win against JB came one day after the Tribe beat Northern York 55-42 in the WASHS gym.

Torbica and Parks again led the way on offense. Torbica scored 14 points and Parks added 10 points.

Torbica had a team-best nine rebounds.

Eric Jacobs was next with nine points, while Smith had eight points.

Monday’s win against the Polar Bears avenged a 48-30 loss in Dillsburg on Dec. 15.

Waynesboro is back in action on Monday when it will host Big Spring in the annual Pack the House Night. The game was postponed on Friday, Jan. 19 due to wintry weather.
