If you’re reading this column from pretty much anywhere in Pennsylvania, you’re already painfully aware that we’ve gone through a number of frigid days this cold season. And next week isn’t looking much better. It’s a rough-and-tumble world out in this chilling environment, and most sports pack it in for the season. But for some reason — perhaps determination or maybe stupidity — runners choose to venture outside and endure. And there’s a lot to endure. First of all, there’s the cold, which wouldn’t even be that bad if it wasn’t also accompanied by driving winds. There’s also the whole…

With homegrown talent dotted across the roster, the Penn State Mont Alto women’s soccer team had its best season in years. Four former Waynesboro athletes — Kiaya Mouer, Madison Eberly, Nicole Jones, and Noel Myers — helped Mont Alto roll to a 14-5-1 record this fall, winning a PSUAC division title before capturing the championship at the PSUAC Tournament. Ex-Waynesboro athletes aren’t just shining on the soccer field, either. We’ve also tracked star efforts from Waynesboro natives in football, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, basketball, wrestling, and swimming. Next month College Corner will shift its focus to athletes from Greencastle,…

We started the youth football season with 21 teams in the Local.News coverage area dreaming of championship glory. And now, after months of laying it out on the field, only one of those teams is left standing atop the podium: The Chambersburg Trojans. Chambersburg’s Pony team recently captured the biggest prize the CFA Youth Football League has to offer, earning a 17-7 win over Steelton in the Federal Conference Super Bowl. It was a perfect way to end a monster season for the Trojans, who went 9-1-1 this fall, taking second in their division before marching their way to the…

You’ve done it. You braved the frigid race paths on Thanksgiving morning and put your best steps forward, zig-zagging through hundreds of competitors on your way to completing the Turkey Trot. Congrats! Display that finisher’s medal proudly and share those race pictures to your heart’s delight. You deserve it. It’s a remarkable high that only gets better as you fuel your body’s recovery with turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes before eventually drifting into a deep sleep under the lullaby of a Detroit Lions football game. If you’re doing it right, the Turkey Day experience should feel like one of those…

There’s no doubt it, the Waynesboro Warriors were one of the toughest teams the United Recreational Soccer League had to offer this fall. The unbeaten Warriors — a co-ed group playing at the U11 level — cruised to a championship in URSL’s 34 White division, outscoring their opponents 45-5 in the process. But the Warriors weren’t done there, as they continued to dominate in season-ending URSL Tournament. It was there that Waynesboro smashed three pool play opponents by a combined 15-0 score, before dispatching the SYA Leopards 8-0 in the championship game. The Waynesboro Youth Soccer Association was also well…

The yearly Super Bowl of politics — Election Day — came and went this week. I voted, and I hope you did, too. And while I take a lot of pride in fulfilling my civic duty, the day itself can be draining and unnerving.
