Jay Alvarez, Rider Men's Basketball

The path to NCAA Division I sports can be long and arduous. Jay Alvarez knows this all too well.

The former Waynesboro star has spent the majority of his college basketball career toiling on the junior college scene, lighting up the scoreboard during stops at Sullivan County Community College and Houston Christian.

And now, after three years of putting in work and building his resume, Alvarez finds himself at Division I Rider University. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound forward has been making the most of his opportunity. As an everyday starter for the Broncos, Alvarez has been averaging double-digit points.

In College Corner this week, we’ll take a closer look at the exploits of Alvarez and other former Waynesboro basketball players, while also wrapping up a fall season that saw freshman soccer phenom True Benshoff score dozens of goals (that’s not a typo) and graduate Ethan Saunders conclude his football career with a bang. We will also shine the spotlight on cross country, volleyball, field hockey, golf, swimming, and indoor track.

In the months to come, College Corner will rotate coverage to Greencastle-Antrim and Chambersburg, before circling back to Waynesboro, once again.
