HAGERSTOWN – November has been declared Municipal Government Works Month in a formal proclamation led by Mayor Teisha Martinez. This declaration celebrates the essential role municipal governments play in the lives of residents and recognizes the importance of citizen participation in local governance, city officials said.
The proclamation highlights Maryland’s strong tradition of municipal government, with 157 municipalities providing community-based services that directly impact the quality of life. Hagerstown, incorporated in 1762, stands as a proud example of how municipal governments empower residents by offering direct access to elected officials and fostering civic engagement, city officials added.
Martinez emphasized that the city is committed to raising awareness about municipal government through public education and outreach. The goal is to encourage residents to engage actively with their local government and recognize its role in making Maryland a great place to live, work and visit.
“Municipal governments represent the most responsible level of government, ensuring that citizens have a voice in shaping their communities,” said Mayor Martinez during the proclamation ceremony. She also expressed gratitude to city officials, staff and residents for their continued dedication to Hagerstown’s growth and prosperity.
With the support of the City Council and in partnership with the Maryland Municipal League, Hagerstown is promoting events and initiatives throughout November to educate the public about the significance of municipal services. These efforts aim to inspire greater participation and strengthen the bond between the city and its residents.
