Emergency crews in Franklin County, are currently combating several large woodland fires that have broken out across the region. The situation has escalated due to a combination of dry weather conditions and strong winds, creating a heightened risk for fire spread.

So far, no buildings or homes are in danger, fire officials said, and no evacuations have been ordered.

The two most significant fires are: Warm Spring Road Fire, A three-acre blaze that is being tackled near Woodbourne Estates on Warm Spring Road, and Mountain Fire, a more extensive 10-acre fire that is burning in the mountainous area of Corls and Golf Course Roads. This larger incident has necessitated a substantial response, including:

  • Dozens of fire units
  • The Piney Mountain Strike team
  • Helicopters from the Department of Forestry performing water drops

The outbreak of these fires can be attributed to several environmental factors:

  • Lack of rainfall this autumn
  • Extremely dry and combustible brush
  • Windy weather

These conditions have significantly increased the risk of fires spreading out of control.

In response to the elevated fire risk, local authorities have taken precautionary steps:

  • Burn bans have been enacted in several municipalities across the Commonwealth.
  • Southampton Township and Shippensburg Borough in Franklin County are currently under burn bans.
  • Violators of these bans may face fines.

The fires are causing concern among local residents and putting a strain on emergency services. The Franklin Fire Company and other area agencies are working tirelessly to contain the blazes and prevent further spread. As the situation continues to develop, residents are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to any local burn bans, stay away from active fire areas so as not to interfere with emergency crews and report any signs of fire immediately to emergency services.
