The Chambersburg football team has shown flashes of good play all season, but inconsistency and bad breaks have made wins hard to come by this fall.
But on Friday night at Trojan Stadium, Mark Luther’s Chambersburg team took a step forward and showed what can happen when all the pieces come together. The Trojans pasted Commonwealth Division newcomer Cedar Cliff by a 38-13 score, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process.
Chambersburg (2-4, 1-4 Commonwealth) trailed 13-7 after a first quarter that saw the Trojans score a TD on a 61-yard pass from Ceagan Truett to Evan Brown. Momentum tipped in Chambersburg’s favor in the second quarter, when the Trojans pulled into the lead with Truett’s second TD pass, a 31-yard strike to Jason Chambers.
The Trojans used a big play on special teams — an 11-yard punt return for a TD from Dylan Panfili — to take a 21-13 lead at halftime.
Chambersburg drove deep into the red zone in the third quarter and fumbled at the Colts’ 2, but the Trojans’ Brady Rosenberry was there to fall on the ball in the end zone to give his team a 28-13 lead.
Chambersburg’s advantage expanded to 35-13 after a three-yard TD run from Imani Watson, before the Trojans capped off scoring with a 35-yard field goal from Trever Luther.
Truett had a solid night for Chambersburg, completing 11 of 14 passes for 191 yards. His top targets were Brown (1 catch, 61 yards), Luther (5-45), Stanley Lozius (1-39), and Jason Chambers (2-38). Watson led the Trojans with 54 rushing yards on seven carries, while Antonio Harrison added 46 yards on 10 rushes.
Cedar Cliff fell to 2-4 and 1-4 in the Commonwealth.
Chambersburg returns to the field on Friday, when it travels to face Carlisle (0-6, 0-5), a team coming off a 42-0 loss to Harrisburg.
Northern 30, Waynesboro 27
Northern put an end to Waynesboro’s two-game winning streak with a three-point victory on Friday, Waynesboro’s homecoming game.
The Tribe (4-2, 3-2 Keystone) scored the first TD of the contest, but Northern (3-3, 3-2) took advantage of rainy conditions with a dominant running attack to seize control of the game. Highlighted by QB Grady Bonin (16 carries, 129 yards, 2 TDs) and Gabe Johnson (20-138-2), the Polar Bears built a 20-6 halftime lead.
Waynesboro made adjustments at the break, and put up a much more spirited fight in the second half.
Tribe QB Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt completed a six-yard TD pass to Hayden Nolan to pull within a TD, 20-13, with eight minutes to play in the third quarter.
Northern went ahead 27-13 late in the third quarter, but the Indians struck back before the end of the quarter with another TD pass from Frazer-Hewitt, this one a 22-yard strike to Nolan.
The Polar Bears added insurance in the fourth quarter with a 20-yard field goal from Anna Lehman to go ahead, 30-20. The field goal would prove to be crucial for Northern, as Waynesboro capped off scoring with Frazer-Hewitt’s third TD pass, a 14-yard completion to Bryan “Tank” Benedict.
The Indians will be aiming to bounce back on Friday, when they hit the road to face Mifflin County (2-4, 1-4), a team coming off a 20-0 win over Palmyra.
Trinity 42, Greencastle-Antrim 13
It was a rough night at the office for Greencastle-Antrim, which fell behind 35-0 at halftime en route to a blowout loss.
The Blue Devils (1-5, 1-4 Colonial) gave up three quick TDs in the first quarter and couldn’t dig themselves out of the hole, giving up two more TDs to trigger the mercy rule clock for the second half.
Greencastle broke up the shutout in the fourth quarter, when Seth Kielek scampered nine yards into the end zone. The Blue Devils added another score when QB Barry Lane connected with Angelini Domino for a 29-yard scoring strike.
Kielek led Greencastle’s offens with four carries for 34 yards, while Lane completed 5 of 9 passes for 63 yards and an interception.
Trinity improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the Colonial.
The Blue Devils will look to get back on track on Friday, when they travel to face Milton Hershey (2-4, 2-2), a team coming off a 20-18 loss to Newport.
Spring Mills 64, North Hagerstown 0
Spring Mills raced ahead to a 38-0 halftime lead and never looked back in Friday’s victory over North Hagerstown.
It has been a monster season for the Cardinals (5-0), who are outscoring opponents 254-0 this fall.
North Hagerstown’s top rusher was Ty’Qwell Fauntleroy, who compiled 36 yards on 13 carries. Hubs’ QB Logan Hoffman completed 3 of 7 passes for 36 yards and an interception. North Hagerstown got 10 tackles from Bryant Noubissie.
The Hubs (0-4) return to the field on Friday, when they travel to face Smithsburg (0-4), a team coming off a 38-0 loss to Brunswick.
Brunswick 38, Smithsburg 0
Brunswick bounced back from a heartbreaking loss to Boonsboro by posting a convincing shutout over Smithsburg on Friday.
The Railroaders improved to 3-1. Smithsburg, which has been held scoreless in back-to-back games, fell to 0-4.
The Leopards will be looking for a bounceback win of their own on Friday, when they host North Hagerstown (0-4), a team coming off a 64-0 loss to Spring Mills.
St. James 16, South Hagerstown 0
St. James used a suffocating defense to win a low-scoring shutout over South Hagerstown on Friday.
The Saints (3-1) got a brilliant game from Liam Hall, who compiled 10 tackles, including four for loss. On the side of the ball, Hall rushed eight times for 60 yards and a TD. Samuel Stonebraker scored Saint James’ other TD, and racked up 111 yards on 19 carries.
South Hagerstown (1-3) returns to action on Friday, when it plays host to Thomas Johnson (1-3), a team coming off a 27-20 loss to Whitman.
