CHAMBERSBURG – The Northern Polar Bears ran its record to 33-3 on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Chambersburg Country Club, finishing the 18-hole Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity golf meet with a 323.

The win gives Northern a five-match lead over second-place Shippensburg (28-8), which scored a 333. Greencastle-Antrim was third with 343, edging James Buchanan in a tiebreaker. Waynesboro (20-16) placed fifth with 348. Gettysburg and Big Spring closed out the scoring.

Waynesboro’s Tyler Fortney has been the standard among league golfers. While the team is having a challenging season under long-time coach Ryan Henderson, Fortney (a senior) was again the medalist. He finished two strokes ahead of Shippensburg’s Kaydee Beckenbaugh with 74.

Northern’s Luke Klawitter was third (77). James Buchanan’s Abram Stock was fourth (78), and Northern’s Logan White finished fifth overall with 79.

The drop off after Fortney has been a significant reason Waynesboro is 20-16 as opposed to much better results among the top four scorers. Instead of scores in the upper 70s or low 80s, the numbers are much higher.

Farin Parks was Waynesboro’s second scorer with 88.

Tuesday’s competition was the sixth of the season. The season finale will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at Great Cove (hosted by James Buchanan). Northern would have to collapse to not clinch the division title, while Waynesboro can still end up with a winning season. Waynesboro is tied with Gettysburg for third place.
