Relive History, Walk Hagerstown’s Past. The Washington County Historical Society is set to host the Ransom of Hagerstown Walking Tour on Saturday, June 29, from 11 a.m. to noon. The event, part of a larger Public History Day, will begin at the Miller House Museum located at 135 West Washington Street in Hagerstown, Maryland. Led by Stephen Bockmiller, author of “Follow the Money: The 1864 Confederate Ransom of Hagerstown, Maryland,” the tour will guide participants through downtown Hagerstown, retracing the steps of the historical event that occurred on July 6, 1864, when Confederate Brigadier General John McCausland and 1,500 soldiers held the town for ransom. The walking tour, which commemorates the 160th anniversary of this incident, will cover approximately one mile and last 50 to 60 minutes, focusing on the area around Public Square.
