WAYNESBORO – Firefighters battled a multi-alarm blaze that engulfed multiple row homes in Waynesboro on Sunday afternoon.

The fire broke out around 11 a.m. in the unit block of Philadelphia Avenue, between West Second and West Third streets. First responders found heavy flames spreading through several row homes upon arrival.

A second alarm was quickly struck, prompting the closure of nearby roads and the deployment of additional firefighting crews from across Franklin County and neighboring regions in Maryland.

Despite the combined efforts of firefighters from Franklin, Washington, and Adams counties, six row homes were affected by the intense fire. The Red Cross was called in to assist displaced residents.

After several hours of battling the blaze, crews managed to bring the fire under control. No injuries have been reported at this time.

The Waynesboro Fire Department expressed gratitude to local businesses, including Rutters, Martin’s, Save a Lot, and the VFW, for donating supplies such as water, Gatorade, and ice to support the firefighters during the arduous operation.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway, and further details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
