WAYNESBORO- The Rotary Club of Waynesboro submitted the following club news:

Last Meeting’s Program (4.2.24 bulletin)

Heather Blount, intervention specialist (formerly reading specialist) at Hooverville Elementary School, gave a presentation on the school’s Hornet Home Connection program. She said the program is designed to engage students and their families with the school and the community at large. Studies have shown there is a correlation between engagement and student performance, she said.

The program is usually held in the form of evening workshops that feature meetings with students and family, plus a variety of family-oriented activities. The activities have included Real Bingo, Reading Aloud, Money Matters, Game Night, The Pet Wars, and Healthy Families. Some of the funding for the programs has come from Title 1 money, but Heather thanked sponsor Doug Tengler for also contributing to the program. She said an average of 20-40 persons have been attending the program.

The school also engages in a “One School, One Book” initiative that features the whole school, including students, teachers, administrators, and staff, reading and discussing the same book over a month.
