Local residents anticipating the opening of a new grocery store in Waynesboro may be loading their carts late this summer.

Construction on ALDI in the Wayne Heights Mall began last fall – the 20,499 square foot grocery store will be located between Rite Aid and Dollar Tree.

“Once we reach the end of our project at the end of April we will turn it over to the ALDI construction crew for a 15-week buildout,” said Chris Higgins, superintendent on site for Buckeye Construction, North Ridgeville, Ohio, which is building the shell for the store.

“It was definitely a struggle with the utilities with all the rock behind the plaza. That delayed the process of getting utilities in and some of our foundation,” Higgins added.

In 1961, the Albrecht Family founded the world’s first discount grocery store in Germany. In 1976, the first ALDI store opened in Iowa. Today, with ALDI headquarters in Batavia, Illinois, there are more than 2,000 stores across 36 states with over 25,000 employees.

“For over 40 years, we have stuck to the same guiding principle: great quality should come with everyday low prices,” according to information on the ALDI website.
