With loaded brackets to complement a full day of wrestling in Harrisburg, the CPWA Open Championships are a grind that can wear down even the most well-conditioned grapplers. Wrestling at a high level for an extended period of time ensures that only the strongest will be left standing on the awards stand at tournament’s end.
Youth grapplers from Waynesboro, Greencastle, and Chambersburg were ready for the moment last weekend.
Greencastle boasted the highest-placing wrestler in the tournament in Ethan Allen, who finished as the runner-up at 115 pounds. Kolston Piper added a third-place finish at 95.
Waynesboro featured a quartet of third-place finishers in Noah Fortney (47 pounds), Noah Swope (50), Ace Beltz (59), and Freedom Young (62). Brixton Hollimon (59) and Eli Hind (65) added fifth-place finishes to help Waynesboro stack up 74 points to finish 17th out of 28 teams.
Chambersburg finished fifth in the team race with 106.5 points on the strenth of Top 8 finishes from James Kearns (4th at Super Heavyweight), Korbin Carbaugh (4th at 50), Myles Spidell (4th at 53), Frankie Bryan (4th at 68), Sebastian Zubia (4th at 115), Knox Bryan (6th at 62), Trey Ashway III (6th at 71), Ace Curtis (8th at 59), Kendyl Kearns (8th at 75), and Gabriel Creamer (8th at 95).
Just to qualify for this “East vs. West” tournament, area grapplers had to prove themselves at the CPWA West Regional, held the previous weekend in Newville. The West Regional saw eight Local.News grapplers win titles: Waynesboro’s Fortney (47), Swope (50), and Beltz (59), Greencastle’s Piper (95) and Allen (115), and Chambersburg’s Spidell (53), Knox Bryan (62), and James Kearns (Super Heavyweight).
Area youth wrestlers will now shift their focus to this weekend’s CPWA Intermediate Championships.
