For years, girls that have wanted to wrestle have had to do so under the direction of a boys’ program. They’ve had to prove their worth at boys’ tournaments.
But this season, thanks in large part to the PIAA sanctioning girls wrestling as an official varsity sport, girls are finding an arena of their own to compete in.
The first two weeks of youth wrestling have shown evidence of this, as we counted at least two all-girls tournaments featuring grapplers from the Local.News area. The Battle of the Braids, held at West Perry, featured three champions from Chambersburg: Mirra Harbaugh (K-6, 166 pounds), Reagan Evans (Junior High, 135), and Aulana Stanton (Junior High, 200). The Dallastown Girls Tournament included a girl from Waynesboro, Rylei Young, who went 2-2 at the junior high 135-pound weight class.
While area girls are just starting to get recognition for their efforts, the local boys are simply picking up from where they left off last season.
The Waynesboro youth wrestling program kicked off its CPWA dual season by going 1-3, with Indians grapplers posting a head-to-head winning percentage of 61 percent. Waynesboro also took on the Pins for Mighty Masyn Tournament in Dover, with Jeziah Smalls, Ace Beltz, and Brixton Hollimon all being crowned champions.
Incomplete results were available for the CPWA Novice Takedown West Tournament at West Perry, but we were able to deduce at least five area champions. Chambersburg’s Isaiah Hurley (8U, 52-53), Christofer Miller (8U, 53-54), and Jack Zimmerman (10U, 111-121) all earned titles at the tournament, as did Greencastle’s Jade Burns (6U, 39-40) and Cash Bender (12U, 82-84).
