Rotary Club of Waynesboro's Chastity Wantz presents a check to Mainstreet Waynesboro's Bill Kohler as club President Brian Lucas looks on

WAYNESBORO–The Rotary Club of Waynesboro presented a check for $9,747.74 to Mainstreet Waynesboro at their regular Tuesday meeting on November 28, 2023.

Mainstreet was this year’s “Battle of the Minds” Co-Sponsor. “Each year we split the earnings 50 / 50 with our Co-sponsor” said Chastity Wantz, chair of the event. “We worked together all year long to make this a success.” The event is held in September at Green Grove Gardens.

“The club picks a new Co-Sponsor each year” said Wantz. “The committee asks club members to identify worthy local organizations to work with us throughout the year. Our President and Vice President make a selection.”

Club President Brian Lucas, who participated in the selection last year, said “It’s a tough selection process. We try to find a group that will have an outsized, positive impact on the local community. There are typically many who are worthy.”

Money raised by this year’s Battle will go to the Market at the Park farmers market in downtown Waynesboro. The market brings in an average of 10,500 visitors to downtown Waynesboro every year and supports local producers and growers, small businesses, local musicians and area craftspeople.

The highlight of each Battle is a Trivial Pursuit-style game Battle pitting 20-30 tables of eight against each other answering multiple choice questions. The winner of the $800 prize for this year’s Battle was a team from F&M Trust.

“This was the 11th Battle of the Minds,” added Wantz. “It’s a great event each year because we and our Co-Sponsors work hard for many months to make sure everyone attending has a great time.”

Wantz credited wide community support for each year’s success.

“We had 30 sponsors and a large number of smaller groups who bought 160 seats,” she said. “While we appreciate all contributions, our largest contributors this year included Blue Ridge Partners, Carl’s Drugs & Savage Pharmacy, Coldwell Banker (Paul Gunder), Country Seal Coating, Covenant Family Dentistry, “Dick, Stein Schemel, Wine & Frey”, DL George, F & M Trust, GRC, Grove-Bowersox, Manitowoc, Middletown Valley Bank, M & T Bank, the Owls Club, Patriot Federal

Credit Union, Potomac Leasing, Rarrick Orthodontics, ReMax (Arlene Unger), Waynesboro Construction, WACCO and Wellspan Health. We extend our thanks to all of them.”

The 12th Battle of the Minds will be held at Green Grove Garden’s on Thursday, September 26, 2024. For more information on Battle of the Minds, click battleoftheminds.org. For more on the Rotary Club of Waynesboro, click www.rotaryclubofwaynesboro.org.
