Contest Winner, Ryder, on Rough Edges, Ales for Tails, beer can

WAYNESBORO— The Antietam Humane Society (AHS) and Rough Edges Brewing recently teamed up for their first annual Ales for Tails Contest, raising just shy of $10K for the shelter. Pet owners donated a nomination fee to AHS and submitted photo entries of their pet for the chance to have them featured on Rough Edges new beer can. Two rounds of voting were held from April through early October, where $1 donations were made by the public to vote for the spokesdog for the Ales for Tails brew.

The winner of the contest, Ryder Patric Thompson, was announced on Saturday, Oct. 14, at Paws 5k, a fun walk/run that was held with the generous help of MainStreet Waynesboro, Inc. at Memorial Park after the main event, Dogtoberfest was rained out. Ryder is a 2-year-old Border Collie who enjoys Dock Diving, frisbee and meeting new people. It was a close race at the end and the 2nd and 3rd place winners, Scout Burge and Atticus Piatt, also received some goodie bags with donations from For the Love of Dogs, Tractor Supply and Rough Edges Brewing.

The beer, Ales for Tails, will be released in 16oz. cans and feature a photo of Ryder. It is an American Lager with an ABV of 5.7%. The beer will be available for purchase at Rough Edges Brewing as well as select distributors in MD and PA with a portion of the sales being donated to AHS. The contest is planned to run annually with nominations beginning again in late Spring 2024.

AHS is based in Waynesboro, PA and aims to promote the well-being of animals and their community through education, care, adoption, and outreach. In 2022, AHS boasted a save-rate of 94%, but success like that is only possible through continued support from our community. “We are so grateful to local businesses like Rough Edges that strive to help people and animals alike” said Kacie Morrell, Executive Director of AHS.

“It’s important to us to support the community that has continued to support us since we opened our doors almost 4 years ago.” Casey of Rough Edges said. “AHS is an excellent organization who goes above and beyond for pets and our community.” She and her husband, Wes opened Rough Edges Brewing in the former News Agency location on Main Street and just recently expanded their food menu with a new kitchen offering hoagies, paninis, pizzas and more.
