When it comes to junior high wrestling, the stage doesn’t get any bigger than 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown: The home of the PJW Junior High State Championships.
Chambersburg’s talented squad sent four of its 11 state qualifiers to the medal stand, with 252-pounder Frank Barrientos leading the way with a third-place showing. After getting knocked out of the championship bracket in the Round of 32, Barrientos put together some kind of run in the wrestlebacks, winning seven straight matches to climb to the third spot on the podium.
Barrientos totaled nine matches against state-caliber competition, compiling a record of 8-1 with seven falls. Making the run sweeter for Barrientos is that his win in the third-place match came against the man that knocked him out of the championship bracket: West Allegheny’s Cam Danna.
The Trojans had three more placewinners on the girls side, with Olivia Kearns (96) and Reagan Evans (125) nailing down third-place finishes and Aulana Stanton placing fourth.
Elsewhere, in the world of youth wrestling, Waynesboro’s group of grapplers put out a championship effort at the CPYWL Championships, which were held at Boiling Springs. The Indians crowned nine champions, including Elijah Pradhan (Bantam, 40), Noah Fortney (Bantam, 44), Noah Swope (Bantam, 48), Ace Beltz (Midget, 56), Raylan Shaw (Midget, 77), Douglas Demott (Midget, 84), Freedom Young (Junior, 55), Brantley Phebus (Intermediate, 148), and Asher Hand (Intermediate, UNL). In addition, Beltz also competed in the Team 209 Spring Novice & Open Tournament, winning the 55-pound title in the 8U Division.
Greencastle also took on the CPYWL Championships and crowned five champions: Landon Kendall (Bantam, 64), Kolston Piper (Junior, 88), Ethan Allen (Junior, 95), Silas Robertson (Intermediate, 101), and Braedon Rogers (Intermediate, 109).
