Shippensburg drops overtime lacrosse game to Shepherd

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. — The Shippensburg University lacrosse team scored seven consecutive goals in the second half on Saturday, but was kept off the scoreboard for the 20 minutes of the game, losing 10-9 in overtime at Shepherd in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Ram Stadium.

Shippensburg (2-4, 0-2 PSAC East) trailed 3-0 after the first quarter but got within one of Shepherd (3-3, 1-1), 5-4, at halftime. The Raiders began their seven-goal run in the third quarter and held a 9-5 lead with 11 minutes remaining. The Rams scored four straight goals to tie it with five minutes to go, and the game went into overtime.

With less than one minute left in the first overtime session, Shepherd’s Kaiya Edwards earned a free position attempt and had her shot hit the post, but she picked up the rebound and scored the golden goal.

Senior Hannah Seifried (Springfield/Sacred Heart Academy Bryn Mawr) led the Raiders with a hat trick to go along with nine draw controls and two groundballs. Freshman Jamie Carvin (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) scored twice, and senior Jena MacDonald (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) had a goal and two assists.

Sophomore Bailey Krahl (Towson, Md./Mercy) had a goal and an assist, and SU got a goal each from graduate Alana Cardaci (Eagleville/Methacton) and senior Kasey Schuchardt (Westminster, Md./Westminster). Cardaci was credited with a team-high three groundballs.

Freshman Kayla Vosburg (Baltimore, Md./Notre Dame Preparatory) made 10 saves.

The Raiders had a 15-8 draw control advantage. Senior McKenna Keller (Wrightsville/Eastern York) had five draw controls.

Shippensburg will host Bloomsburg at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Robb Sports Complex.

Shepherd softball team grabs getaway win in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Shepherd University (5-10) handed Le Moyne a 1-0 setback in softball action at The Spring Games in Florida on Saturday.   

Senior third baseman Nicole Purtell (Centreville, Va./Centreville) led off the sixth with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice by sophomore outfielder Chloee Burton (Maurertown, Va./Central). Graduate student infielder Leann Brown (Hume, Va./Fauquier) followed with a single to score Purtell with the game-winner. 

Sophomore pitcher Hannah Ruffner (Charles Town, W.Va./Washington) (7.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB) (2-4) gained the win. Laura Bennett (7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 0 BB) (5-4) took the loss.  

The Rams return to action on March 29 when they host West Virginia Wesleyan for a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader.
