CHAMBERSBURG—The Franklin County Commissioners will host a tire collection event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 8 at the former Franklin County Jail, 625 Franklin Farm Lane, Chambersburg.
Staff from the county’s Planning Department, under its mosquito and tick-borne disease control program, and All Cleaned Out Junk Removal are coordinating the event.
Currently, strict guidelines and fees act to hinder some individuals’ ability to properly dispose of scrap tires.
Often old tires are discarded and remain unused on properties until the resident has the time or the means for proper disposal. In the meantime, these tires can fill with rain water and become the perfect breeding habitat for mosquitoes.
The April 8 collection event helps Franklin County residents dispose of unwanted tires for a reduced fee while at the same time eliminating potential mosquito breeding sites.
Franklin County residents must pre-register for this first-come, first-served event. There is a limit of 20 tires per household and the fees are:
- Regular vehicle tires (up to 35 inches in height) – $1 per tire
- Tires measuring 36-47 inches in height – $2 per tire
- Tires measuring 48 inches in height or larger – $15 per tire
- Tires on rims and tires that are full of debris, such as mud, water or concrete will not be accepted.
