Greencastle’s Rachel Verhoef leads ShipU volleyballl win

SHIPPENSBURG – The Shippensburg University volleyball team used early dominance on Senior Day to sweep Lock Haven in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division matchup at Heiges Field House. Set scores were 25-19, 25-19 and 25-18.
Shippensburg (13-14, 6-6 PSAC East) had one Raider with double-digit kills as junior Rachel Verhoef (Greencastle/Greencastle-Antrim) posted her 13th double-digit kill output this season with 10 kills. Verhoef also had a career-high four aces and hit .467 from the floor. Freshman Emily Gardner (Avon, Ohio/Avon) had nine kills and seven digs.

Freshman setter Lily Letchworth (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) had 26 assists and a career-high three aces. Freshman libero Kelsie Baus (Macungie/Emmaus) led the Raiders in digs with 14 digs and three assists.

Lock Haven (3-19, 1-11 PSAC East) had one player with double-digit kills. SU’s nine aces and 39 kills made the difference against the Bald Eagles.

Shippensburg featured its three seniors in the opening set, as Lydia Bauer (Chesterfield, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional), Syera McCormick (Partlow, Va./Courtland) and Joelle Schultz (Hagerstown, Md./Saint James) all contributed points. All three women were also honored in a pre-match ceremony.

Shippensburg men’s soccer drops senior night match

The Shippensburg University men’s soccer team honored five senior players in a pre-match ceremony Saturday night but dropped a 3-1 decision to Lock Haven in  Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division match at David See Field.

Shippensburg (4-10-3, 2-10 PSAC East) was trailing 1-0 in the 25th minute when senior Harry Kershaw (Wardle, England/Wardle Academy) was fouled in the box. Senior Kyle Willwerth (New Holland/Garden Spot) converted the resulting penalty kick for his first collegiate goal.

Lock Haven (13-2-2, 10-1-1) scored in 20th minute off a tight cross from Colton Swanson that was headed into the net by Samuel Hershey. The Bald Eagles retook the lead in the 34th minute when Andrea DiSomma snuck a pass to Zane Puhala who scored a breakaway goal. Lock Haven built on its lead in the 71st minute off a DiSomma goal that was set up by a Hershey pass.

Lock Haven affirmed its ranking as the PSAC Eastern Division Champions with the victory.

Before the match, the Raiders recognized Cory Ferguson (Mars/Mars Area), Owen Iacobelli (Breinigsville/Parkland), Kershaw, Rene Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador/Chambersburg Area (Pa.) (Wilson)) and Willwerth in a pre-match ceremony in which the men were presented jerseys. Saturday’s match was the season finale for Shippensburg.

Two Raiders earn regional women’s cross country honors

LOCK HAVEN — The Shippensburg University women’s cross country team had three runners finish among the Top 30 on Saturday, including two All-Region performances, as it concluded its 2021 season with a ninth-place finish at the 2021 NCAA Atlantic Region Championships hosted by Lock Haven University.

Senior Kyra Gerber (Dillsburg/Northern York) and junior Isabelle Gulgert (Herndon, Va./South Lakes) paced the Raiders to achieve the All-Region classifications from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) by virtue of their Top 25 finishes. Both women recorded 6K cross country collegiate bests with their respective runs.
