WAYNESBORO – Carter Hough couldn’t miss. Rayshawn Frazer-Hewitt broke loose in the second half, and the Waynesboro Indians overcame a sluggish start to defeat the Shippensburg Greyhounds, 73-53, in Mid-Penn Colonial Division action, on Pack the House Night inside a packed gym at Waynesboro Area Senior High School.
Hough was 10 for 12 from the field, including 3 for 3 from the three-point arc. He also made 7 of 9 free throws to finish with 30 points. Frazer-Hewitt caught fire in the second half, dribbling and driving for layups and also firing up some longer-range shots on his way to an 18-point night. He also added four assists.
It didn’t start that way, as Shippensburg, which took Northern York to overtime and lost by four points to Greencastle-Antrim, controlled the tempo in the first half and led at halftime 30-29.
Shippensburg’s largest lead was 22-16, but it seemed much bigger the way Waynesboro’s offense was struggling and the defense could not find an answer for Brady Morris. Morris tallied 15 points in the first half.
The second half was an entirely different game.
“We started getting stops on defense, and I thought especially in the beginning of the third, our pace, we were getting some transition buckets,” said Waynesboro head coach Tom Hoffman. “For whatever reason, they were looking a little sluggish at the beginning of the third.
“I was glad we were able to hang with them in the first half, because at different times they were up five points. You get a little worried if they create too much of a gap, then we start playing out of whack. It was a good win.”
Frazer-Hewitt opened the second half with a three-pointer, a bucket that foreshadowed things to come. He then sank a pair of foul shots after Ship’s Devin Singer tied the game at 32. It was déjà vu as Frazer-Hewitt made another field goal to give the Indians its biggest lead of the game, 36-32, with 6:13 to play in the third quarter.
The 9-0 run continued with a basket from Hough, who was en fuego the entire game. Dominic Goodworth capped the surge with a trifecta to make the score 41-32.
“We knew they were solid,” Hoffman said of the Hounds. “Our league is insane. On any given night, somebody you don’t think could beat somebody does.”
Nate Nystrom scored eight points and grabbed seven rebounds, six on the defensive end.
