Waynesboro boys snap skid with 66–42 win over Gettysburg

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity boys’ basketball team has had its ups and downs in the young 2025-26 season, mostly downs.

But in a quick reversal of fortune, the Indians – who started out 0-5 – won for the second time in three games on Monday, Dec. 22. Waynesboro topped Gettysburg 66-42 in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division game before an enthusiastic home crowd.

It seems the focus this season has revolved around the success or lack of success in sinking three-point field goals. The long-range shots serve to boost the morale of the team making them, and demoralizing the team on the other side.

Well, the Tribe (2-5) made eight of them against the Warriors. Dominic Goodworth and Jayden Tyler each made three treys. Carter Hough and Danny Martin had one three-pointer apiece.

Goodworth led all scorers with 18 points. Rashawn Frazer-Hewitt followed with 13 points, while all of Tyler’s points came from three-point land, and Hough and Nate Nystrom both finished with eight points.

“Last Monday, I said, ‘If we learned how to play in the second half of the Greencastle game and can use it as a springboard for the rest of the year, it was well worth the loss that went along with it. We’ve had 13 or 14 straight good quarters.”

It began with a 57-31 victory over Shippensburg, two days after a 61-55 loss to Greencastle. Waynesboro lost to Red Lion on Saturday, Dec. 20, but rebounded for the big win against Gettysburg.

Things were close early in the game, just as most games are. But Waynesboro began to distance itself from its Adams County opponent beginning late in the opening quarter.

The Warriors took their only lead of the game, 2-0. Waynesboro scored nine of the next 11 points to lead 9-4. It was 9-6 when Goodworth drained a three-pointer, and then Hough made a layup. Goodworth closed the scoring in the quarter, giving Waynesboro a 16-7 lead.

In the second period, the Indians stretched the lead from nine points to 16 at halftime, as Waynesboro led 34-18 after the first 16 minutes.

Tyler knocked down two three-pointers to push the advantage to 23-12 with just over six minutes remaining in the second period. It was 25-16 before the Tribe scored nine of the final 11 points to lead 34-18 at the half.

The Indians are back on the hardwood Monday at the Eastern York Holiday Tournament. Waynesboro plays Spring Grove at 7:30. The Tribe will play either Eastern York or Bethlehem Catholic on Tuesday.
