Health with Holly: Simple habits that help prevent weight gain as you age

For many people, gaining a little weight each year seems like a normal part of life. Over time, though, those small gains can add up to become serious health concerns. The good news? You don’t need strict diets or extreme workouts to keep weight gain in check. A few simple habits, practiced daily, can make a lasting difference.

Here’s how to start.

Move more throughout the day

It’s easy to think that only trips to the gym count as exercise. But many people in rural areas already have a head start with daily movement. Whether it’s farm work, gardening, or chasing after kids, these activities burn calories and keep the body flexible and strong.

Even so, adding extra movement helps. Parking farther from store entrances, taking an extra lap around the house, or even setting a timer to stand and stretch every hour can increase daily activity. Even light daily physical activity can help prevent long-term weight gain and improve overall health.

Make protein a priority

Protein helps build and maintain muscle, keeps you full longer, and can prevent overeating later in the day. Each meal should include a good source of protein like eggs, beef, chicken, turkey, fish, beans, or Greek yogurt.

People who eat more protein tend to maintain healthier body weights and muscle mass as they age. This is especially important because muscle naturally decreases over time unless steps are taken to maintain it.

Drink water regularly

Many people confuse thirst with hunger. When the body needs water, it can send mixed signals that feel like cravings for food. Staying hydrated can help to regulate appetite and keep metabolism working properly.

The Mayo Clinic recommends approximately eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily, although that amount can change based on a person’s size, activity level and climate (Source: Mayo Clinic).

Keeping a refillable water bottle nearby is an easy way to remember to sip throughout the day.

Get consistent sleep

Sleep plays a bigger role in weight than many realize. Poor sleep can increase hunger hormones and lower the ones that help people feel full. That can lead to overeating, especially sugary or fatty foods.

Adults should aim for seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Good sleep hygiene includes going to bed at the same time each night, keeping the bedroom cool and dark and avoiding screens before bedtime.

Practice mindful eating

Many people eat while distracted. They watch TV, scroll through their phones, or eat at their desk while working. This can lead to overeating without even realizing it.

Mindful eating means paying full attention to the meal. Sit down at the table, chew slowly and notice when the body feels full. Studies show that people who practice mindful eating often consume fewer calories and feel more satisfied after meals.

Watch portion sizes

Today’s food portions are often much larger than what the body needs. Using smaller plates and bowls can help control serving sizes without making you feel deprived. It’s also smart to avoid eating directly from the bag or container, as this makes it harder to track how much is being consumed.

Limit sugary drinks and snacks

Sodas, sweet teas, and even fruit juices can add hundreds of extra calories a day without providing any nutrition. Similarly, processed snacks are often high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats.

Switching to water, unsweetened tea, or coffee can save a surprising number of calories. For snacks, try fresh fruit, veggies with hummus or a handful of nuts.

Final thoughts

Preventing weight gain doesn’t require perfect habits or giving up favorite foods. Instead, it’s about making small, sustainable changes that fit into daily life.

By moving more, eating balanced meals, staying hydrated, getting enough sleep, and practicing mindful eating, it’s possible to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. These habits can lead to feeling better, having more energy and enjoying life at any age.
