The Philadelphia Flyers survived their toughest stretch of the 2023-24 season by winning three games (Florida, Toronto and Boston), earning points in two others (Carolina and New York Rangers) and losing four (Tampa Bay, Toronto, Boston and Florida). Then, with the Flyers closing in on a playoff berth and entering a more manageable portion of the season with games against Montreal, Chicago, Buffalo, Columbus and Montreal), it appeared that head coach John Tortorella’s team would be postseason-bound for the first time since the 2019-20 season. But for anybody who knows anything about Philadelphia professional sports teams, disappointment usually follows expectations.…

WAYNESBORO – Elijah Miller started lifting weights in 2022 to prepare for the wrestling open gym at Waynesboro Area Senior High School. The rest, they say, is history. The 15-year-old who began competing for the United States Powerlifting Association, has earned seven state records and one national record. Funny how great things start small. Miller, the son of Joseph and Mercedes Miller of Rouzerville, decided he didn’t want to wrestle. Instead, he played basketball as a seventh grader. But the initial interest in weightlifting became more acute. So, he obtained membership to the Waynesboro Area YMCA and began a journey…
WAYNESBORO – No comeback was needed for the Waynesboro Indians varsity baseball team on Wednesday. Waynesboro built a 7-1 lead, and the only hiccup in the game came in the top of the seventh when Shippensburg pushed across two runs. But Blake Daywalt, who pitched a masterful game, gave way to Mason Gochenour with two outs in the top of the seventh. Gochenour got the last out, and the Tribe won its fifth straight game, 7-3 in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division game. “Pitching comes down to location, movement, and change of speed. Blake knows that,” said Waynesboro coach Travis Hardman.…
WAYNESBORO – When the Waynesboro Indians varsity baseball team fell behind 5-0 in the first inning against visiting West Perry, it seemed like the winds swirling around Robinson Field weren’t in favor of head coach Travis Hardman’s team. But in the immortal words of Yogi Berra, “It ain’t over until it’s over.” And it was indeed over when Logan Clapsaddle slid home ahead of the throw on a beautiful bunt off the bat of Brett Powell in the bottom of the eighth inning. Final score: Waynesboro 8, West Perry 7. The Mustangs, behind a strong outing from starting pitcher Cole…
1979 isn’t just a song by Smashing Pumpkins. It was the year that Larry Bird and Magic Johnson met for the first time on the basketball court. The next year, Bird (from French Lick, Indiana, and the star player for Indiana State), and Johnson (from Lansing, Michigan, and the star player for Michigan State), both were drafted into the National Basketball Association and together virtually saved the NBA from extinction. Ratings and interest in the league were so low, that speculation swirled about the future of the sport in America. But that all changed when Bird and Johnson (who played…
WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians varsity baseball team led by a run early in the game and then trailed by a run midway into their non-league game against visiting Cumberland Valley. Needing a boost, the Tribe got it when they scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and then held the Eagles scoreless in the final three innings on the way to an 8-2 win. It was Waynesboro’s third straight victory, and, with a big stretch of games coming up against Mid-Penn Colonial Division opponents West Perry, Shippensburg and Greencastle-Antrim, Saturday’s contest serves as a good rallying…
WAYNESBORO – So far this young season, the Waynesboro Area Senior High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams have done what they needed to notch their second wins of the season. On Tuesday, under drizzly skies and chilly temperatures (in the upper 40s), the spring season showed its true colors by appearing more like mid-November than warming April. In that respect, no one was disappointed because it is what it is. The Indians and Maidens used a numbers advantage coupled with some strong individual performances to defeat the Bulldogs. The Waynesboro boys’ team won 105-44, while the Maidens…

Below are rosters from all the teams: MAJOR LEAGUE AMERICAN LEGION Aiden Woodring, Lucas Shank, Kaden Lewis, Ryan Beck, Weston Grimes, Luke Rutkowski, Bryson Fraley, Graham Oyler, Benjamin Mowen, Westin Weber, Noah Royer. EAGLES Lennon Bitner,…
WAYNESBORO – Tank Benedict rapped a two-run triple in the bottom of the second, and Kellan Smith scored on a ground out by Brett Powell in the sixth inning to give the Waynesboro Indians a three-run cushion as the Tribe went on to defeat Big Spring, 4-1 in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity baseball game. It was Waynesboro’s second win in two league games, the other coming in an 8-6 victory over Boiling Springs on Tuesday. It’s hard to call the Indians’ fourth run as an insurance run, but in light of the top of the sixth inning, it was…
WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity softball team has pretty much had Boiling Springs’ number through the years – many times with double-digit victories. But on Tuesday, a day after being no-hit by Chambersburg in an 11-0 loss, the Maidens came out staggering. They fell behind 3-2 but somehow, despite an uncharacteristic lack of offense, rallied to take a 6-5 lead thanks to a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Alexis Thompson. Then the wheels fell off. Boiling Springs responded with three runs in the top of the seventh inning and kept the Maidens in check in the bottom…
