WAYNESBORO – The weather was pleasant, and the game was, too. The Waynesboro Maidens used a five-run third inning and got plenty of big hits and some good pitching and defense during a 12-2 six-inning win against West Perry in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division varsity softball game on Wednesday. Emma Bradley and Abby McElroy teamed up on the pitching mound to stifle West Perry’s bats, while Alex Monk smacked a solo home run in the second inning and Bradley belted a two-run home run in the fourth inning. “They hit the ball well, pitched well, played good defense,” said Waynesboro…

WAYNESBORO – Senior pitcher Mason Gochenour has been a rock for the Waynesboro Indians varsity baseball team. He was more like a boulder on a hot Monday afternoon. Gochenour pitched a complete game, and, fortunately, he didn’t need many runs – and he didn’t get many. The Indians scored single runs in the bottom of the third inning and sixth inning and held the Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils scoreless in a 2-0 Mid-Penn Colonial Division victory at Robinson Field. Nine days ago, Waynesboro defeated G-A 2-1 in Greencastle. The win improved the Tribe’s overall record to 10-3. Waynesboro upped its league-leading…

WAYNESBORO – Waynesboro’s varsity baseball game against Chambersburg will have to wait for a sunny day. A steady – and progressively heavier – rain prompted the suspension of Saturday’s non-league contest. A makeup date will be announced at a later date. The Trojans were leading 2-0 when the game was suspended in the top of the fifth inning. But the game was a much-anticipated one – not because of the opponent, but the theme. The game was designated Youth Day, and former head coach Greg Chandler was honored before the game and threw out the ceremonial first pitch to 1989…

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro varsity softball team has been stung by late losses during the season. But not this time. The Maidens used a three-run bottom of the third inning that erased a 2-1 deficit, and relief pitcher Riley Shetler and a dependable defense backing her up did the rest. The result was a 4-2 Mid-Penn Colonial Division victory on Tuesday on a pleasant spring day at Maiden Field. Riley Shetler hit and pitched for Waynesboro. It was her two-run home run in the third frame that provided the winning margin. She took over for starting pitcher Emma Bradley after…

WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Indians are usually the team that makes the final push to victory. The comeback, the rally, the celebration of a walk-off hit – all are trademarks of Waynesboro baseball. On Wednesday, April 17, at Robinson Field, Boiling Springs was the team that rallied for victory. The Bubblers, which lost to the Indians 8-6 on March 26 in Boiling Springs, scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning, and relief pitcher Jonah Richardson struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to preserve a 3-2 Mid-Penn Colonial Division win. Waynesboro had won six…

By Lee Goodwin WAYNESBORO – The Waynesboro Maidens varsity track and field team won all three relay events and got double wins from True Benchoff and Jada Creager on Tuesday. In all, Waynesboro garnered firsts in 14 of 18 events during a 90-60 victory over Shippensburg on a warm and breezy afternoon at the Charles A. “Rip” Engle Sports Complex. “What carried the girls was the field events,” said Waynesboro head coach Jim Rickett. “We outscored Ship by 10 in the throwing events and 16 in the jumps and pole vault.” Creager had a ‘field day’ (no pun intended). The…

WAYNESBORO – In 2003, Travis Hardman’s life could have remained in Northern Virginia. Instead of pursuing a career in secondary education in Fairfax, Virginia after receiving his bachelor’s degree from George Mason University, Hardman chose to return to the place of his birth. The link between the two was baseball. And, 21 years later, Hardman is in a good place. He is in his fourth season as head coach of the Waynesboro Area Senior High School varsity baseball team. He is married, and he and wife Dawn are expecting their third child (due May 15). “I graduated (from GMU) in…

The Philadelphia Flyers survived their toughest stretch of the 2023-24 season by winning three games (Florida, Toronto and Boston), earning points in two others (Carolina and New York Rangers) and losing four (Tampa Bay, Toronto, Boston and Florida). Then, with the Flyers closing in on a playoff berth and entering a more manageable portion of the season with games against Montreal, Chicago, Buffalo, Columbus and Montreal), it appeared that head coach John Tortorella’s team would be postseason-bound for the first time since the 2019-20 season. But for anybody who knows anything about Philadelphia professional sports teams, disappointment usually follows expectations.…
