WAYNESBORO – What a difference a game makes. Last Friday the Waynesboro varsity boys’ basketball team struggled to score 40 points against visiting Northern York. Though it was a win, it wasn’t characteristic of a Waynesboro team that is used to imposing its will against opposing teams. The Indians won that game, 43-29. On Monday, Waynesboro found its rhythm and got a lot more scoring distribution along the way, as the Indians dominated South Western 77-56. “We weren’t embarrassed, but we were a little disappointed by our game on Friday (against Northern), especially in front of the home crowd,” said…

WAYNESBORO – It seems there is no end to sports that can be added to a school’s menu. Recently, swimming became a fully sanctioned sport at Waynesboro Area Senior High School. Last year, a new sport – with a unique format – was added at WASHS, and it is making an impact not just in terms of athletics but in relationship-building between learning support students and their mainstream counterparts. Bocce, a sport that dates back to the Roman Empire and played predominantly in southeastern Europe for centuries before branching out to other countries, is sponsored by Special Olympics and pairs…

WAYNESBORO – On a night when the Waynesboro Indians varsity basketball team wasn’t running on all cylinders, senior Ryan Shaffer provided the spark needed to get past a Northern York team that slowed the Tribe’s offense. Shaffer scored nearly half of the team’s points, finishing a team-best 30-pus minutes of playing time with 21 points (including a pair of three-point field goals). Shaffer dished out three assists, had four rebounds and blocked a shot as well during Waynesboro’s 43-29 Mid-Penn Colonial Division win. “I think Ryan has had a great start to the season,” said Waynesboro head coach Tom Hoffman.…
WAYNESBORO – History was made at the Waynesboro Area YMCA on Tuesday. WAYNESBORO – The name Max Bishop probably doesn’t turn many heads around Waynesboro – unless you’re an “old timer.” But Bishop, born in Waynesboro in 1899, went on to enjoy a prosperous Major League Baseball career with the Philadelphia A’s during the 1930s before ending his career with the Boston Red Sox. In 2004, Steve Tanner began collecting Max Bishop memorabilia. During the past nearly 20 years, the former Waynesboro Area Senior High School teacher and boys’ soccer coach has put together a modest collection that features old photographs and, of course, baseball cards. “I went with Kerry Miller up…
