Looking Back: Tom Robinson

LOOKING BACK. The legacy that Tom Robinson left on the Waynesboro community can not be overstated. Robinson died in 2014 after battling cancer. He coached Waynesboro American Legion Post 15 for 40 years (from 1975 to 2014). Robinson played in the Waynesboro Youth League for four years and Pony League for two more. Three years of high school varsity baseball came at the same time Robinson played for Waynesboro American Legion Post 15, from 1961 to 1963. He was selected to play in two American Legion Scout’s Showcase All-Star Games as a catcher. Robinson went on to play baseball at Hagerstown Junior College in 1964 and 1965 and played adult league baseball for one year (1965). He then played in the Waynesboro Area Fast-Pitch Softball League from 1966 to 1969, when he began coaching at the Pony League level. He was an assistant coach for five years before being head coch for the Hagerstown Motor Express (league champions) Colt League team in 1974. A year later, Robinson took over managerial duties at Post 15. In 1995, Robinson was inducted into the Pennsylvania American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame. Waynesboro is hosting this year’s Region 4 tournament. The last time Waynesboro hosted the event was 1996. (Photo by Lee Goodwin)
