We only have so much energy to devote to exercise each day. We all hit the wall eventually, right? Our bodies and minds protect us by establishing limitations and giving us hints when we start to push ourselves too hard. But it’s wild how all of this logic can get tossed right out the window when we are thrust into a desperate situation. If you’re being chased by an alligator, for example, it’s remarkable how long you can maintain that 40-yard dash pace. I found myself in such a situation last week, when I had to bear the unbearable weight…

Out for a run on a sweltering hot August day, I heard the sound of the marching band practicing. It was all I needed to hear to forget about the temps and how summer still has more than a full month remaining before the seasons turn: In my mind, it’s already fall. Someone get me a pumpkin spiced latte! The band sounds disjointed and off beat at this stage of the game, but as the days progress into weeks, this group will evolve into a well-oiled machine that entertains crowds and provides musical inspiration to the football team. Of course,…

You can almost feel it in the air: Fall sports are nearly upon us. But before we dive into the world of football, let’s give both the leaves and temperatures a chance to fall as we shift our monthly College Corner coverage to Chambersburg and remember the season that was last spring. Across the board, ex-Trojans performed exceptionally well at the collegiate level. Karter Reath, a freshman at Geneva, won a national championship in the steeplechase, while at PSU Mont Alto, a group of five former Chambersburg players helped lead their school’s baseball program to the USCAA Small College World…

North Carolina’s Greensboro Aquatic Center was jam-packed with the best swimmers in the nation at last week’s YMCA National Long Course Championships. Among the standouts was a quartet of Chambersburg Memorial YMCA swimmers — Amir Tasker, Jed Ritchie, Alex Kaczmark, and Cullen McGraw — who teamed up for an eighth-place finish in 8:00.02 in the 800 freestyle relay. The lightning-fast relay team highlighted a Chambersburg squad that posted 56 points in the team standings, good enough for 20th in the nation. The Chambersburg girls did not score any points, but the championship meet proved to be a great experience for…

I was about three years into my marriage when I first met her. We clicked in an instant, and from the beginning, I knew she’d be with me every step of the way. When I shattered my knee playing tennis, she patiently and soothingly walked me through rehab until I was stronger than ever. She introduced me to running and later took my breath away when she guided me to a PR in the 5K. For years it was a match made in heaven. We went run-streaking together, broke two hours in the half marathon, and even shared a few…
