WAYNESBORO – It’s been that kind of season for the Waynesboro Area Senior High School’s varsity wrestling team.

The 2025-26 season has been partly defined by youth, especially in the lower weight classes. The other aspect of the squad has been the experience of the upper weights, led by junior Anthony Ausherman.

Ausherman started the campaign with seven straight wins. He is currently 21-4 and looking forward to a strong postseason. His resume includes wins over wrestlers with impressive resumes of their own. He pinned Preston Gladfelter of Bermudian Springs, who in 2024-25 placed second in the sectional tournament and fifth in the district 3-AA tourney.

Of course, Ausherman also lost to some strong opponents, including Newport’s Kaj Miller. Miller placed second in the District 3-AA championships and was third in the Southeast Regionals. Waynesboro’s 215-pounder lost 12-0 to Paxton Hunt of Garnet Valley. Hunt was third in the sectional tourney and fourth in the Southeast-AAA championships and advanced to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament.

Ausherman’s most recent victory was a first-period pin against Hommy Perez Vila of Central York on Jan. 10 at the Patriot Duals hosted by Red Land High School. Ausherman’s pin of Perez Vila was his 13th of the season. Two victories came on technical falls and three by decision.

Ausherman, who was 28-12 last season and placed third in the Section 4 tournament, will continue his quest on Thursday as the Indians travel to Shippensburg to face the Greyhounds in a Mid-Penn Colonial Division meet.

Waynesboro’s next home contest will be against James Buchanan on Jan. 22.
