It’s taken a few years, but the Chambersburg track and field squad’s Tim Cook Invitational has evolved from a warm-up invite to a bona fide showcase meet loaded with contenders.
Last weekend’s invite, held at Edwin H. Sponseller Track & Field Complex, drew 34 teams and more than 1,000 athletes. The meet featured a handful of standout performances from athletes in the Local.News1.org coverage area.
Jaylynn Schmuck, of Greencastle-Antrim, was the only local event winner. She conquered the triple jump with a 36-0, while also taking sixth in the long jump with a 16-1.75. Teammates Bailey Hurley (girls discus, 121-5) and Noah Parks (800, 1:59.47) added runner-up finishes.
Several others recorded second-place finishes at the Cook Invite, including Chambersburg’s Liam Kirkpatrick (1,600, 4:31.21), Daniel Casagrandi (400, 50.87), Jon Dawe (300 hurdles, 41.22), and Kaden Rife (3,200, 9:52.17) and Waynesboro’s Ben Williams (javelin, 166-2) and Jaeda Dockman (high jump, 5-0).
The Dwight Scott Invitational featured six winners from the area: North Hagerstown’s Bradley Helman (1,600, 4:31.53), Rian Johnson (800, 2:14.20), Lauren Stine (1,600, 5:02.34), and Anna Chamberlin (high jump, 5-3), and Smithsburg’s Tyler Younker (800, 2:03.46) and Cora Gentzel (3,200, 12:03.03).
On the baseball and softball fields, two area squads are off to unbeaten starts. North Hagerstown’s baseball squad is 4-0, while Greencastle-Antrim’s softball team has also won all four of its games.
