There was no stopping Angie Ayala-Luna during her freshman season as a midfielder for the Hagerstown Community College women’s soccer team.
The former Waynesboro star started in 18 games for the Hawks in 2025 and exploded for a 53-point campaign, totaling 20 goals and 13 assists. Ayala-Luna’s big effort on the pitch landed her a First Team selection to the All-Region 20 squad.
Fast-forward to this fall. Through seven games, Ayala-Luna is showing no signs of a sophomore slump.
She’s scoring goals, dishing assists, and most importantly, guiding Hagerstown to a dominant start to the season. The Hawks are undefeated in games where Ayala-Luna gets on the scoreboard.
In College Corner this month, we’ll take a closer look at the exploits of Ayala-Luna, while also shining the spotlight on other former Waynesboro athletes competing at the next level. Our list includes 32 athletes over 12 sports and includes Linkoln Gundacker, who has led Geneva College’s golf team to top-three finishes in every meet this season, and Millersville’s Bella Ruefle, a cross country runner who recently cracked a sub-20 PR in her first 5K race of the season.

Angie Ayala-Luna, Sophomore, Hagerstown CC
Hagerstown is off to a brilliant start this season, and Ayala-Luna has been a big part of the reason.
Ayala-Luna has started in all seven games for the Hawks and has totaled five goals and three assists, cracking the scoring column in all but one contest. She opened her campaign on a three-game points streak, which began with a two-goal performance on Sept. 1 in a 4-0 win over Frederick CC.
Ayala-Luna was kept off the scoreboard in her team’s only loss, a 2-1 setback to Montgomery College on Sept. 15. How did she respond? By going on another three-game points streak, of course. She most recently took the field on Sept. 24, posting a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over WVU Potomac State College.
The Hawks (5-1-1) returned to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 29, for a road game at Garrett College.
True Benshoff, Junior, Cleveland State
Benshoff, a 5-foot-8 forward, is seeking her first goal of the season.
She has started all 10 games for the Vikings and has totaled 11 shots over 720 minutes of playing time. Benshoff most recently took the field on Sept. 24, logging 64 minutes in a 1-0 loss to Robert Morris.
Cleveland State (1-8-1, 1-1-1 Horizon League) returns to competition on Thursday, Oct. 1, for a home game against IU Indy.
Noel Myers, Senior, PSU Mont Alto
Myers, a 5-foot-2 midfielder, has appeared in five of seven games for Mont Alto, including a start.
She most recently took the field on Sept. 26 in a 5-0 win over PSU Beaver.
The Lions (5-2, 3-0 PSUAC) return to action on Thursday, Oct. 1, with a road match at Christendom.
Gracie French, Junior, Juniata
French recently netted her first goal of the season.
A 5-foot-3 forward, she found the back of the net in a 4-0 victory over Mt. Aloysius on Sept. 18. French has started in five games for the Eagles this fall.
Juniata (3-3, 0-1 Landmark Conference) returns to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with a home game against Pitt-Bradford.
Eric Jacobs, Sophomore, Hagerstown CC
Jacobs, a 6-foot defender, has started in nine games for Hagerstown this fall.
He is a key cog for a defense that is allowing 2.3 goals per game.
The Hawks (5-3-2, 3-3-1 MD Juco) return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 29, for a road game at Garrett College.
Nikki Davis, Sophomore, Messiah
Davis has been a regular in the lineup for Messiah.
A 5-foot-5 forward, Davis has played in all eight games for the Falcons, including two starts, and has recorded one goal and one assist. Her goal came on Sept. 26 in a 4-0 win over Arcadia.
Messiah (4-2-2) returns to the field on Thursday, Oct. 1, at Lancaster Bible College.
Trace Dockman, Senior, Randolph College
Dockman, a Waynesboro native who went to Scotland Chapel Academy, has seen action in five games this fall, including one start.
A 6-foot-2, 175-pound defender, Dockman has been a regular contributor for a defense that is allowing 1.38 goals per game. He most recently took the field on Sept. 26, taking a shot in a 5-0 win over Averett.
The Wildcats (4-3-1, 1-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference) return to the pitch on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with a road game at Roanoke College.
Lainey Peyton, Freshman, Pitt-Greensburg
Peyton, a forward/midfielder, recently made the first appearance of her college career.
She took the field on Sept. 22, logging 13 minutes of playing time in a 4-3 loss to Wooster.
Pitt-Greensburg (4-4) returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 3, with a home game against Pitt-Bradford.
Volleyball
Sophia Mentzer, Freshman, Stevenson
Mentzer, a 5-foot libero/defensive specialist, recently played the first set of her collegiate career.
She took the court on Sept. 25, logging one dig in a 3-0 win over Notre Dame (Md.).
Stevenson (8-5, 2-0 MAC) returns to competition on Tuesday, Sept. 29, with a road match at York College.
Football
Mihailo Torbica, Freshman, Lebanon Valley
Torbica, a 6-foot-6, 265-pound offensive tackle, has seen action in two of four games for Lebanon Valley.
He most recently took the field on Sept. 26 in a 13-10 loss to Alvernia.
The Dutchmen (0-4, 0-3 MAC) return to the field on Saturday, Oct. 10, with a home game against Stevenson.
Golf
Linkoln Gundacker, Junior, Geneva
With Gundacker in Geneva’s starting lineup, the Golden Tornadoes have registered podium team finishes at every meet this season.
Gundacker opened his campaign by shooting an 86 on Aug. 31 at the Westminster Invitational, an event that saw his squad finish runner-up. Geneva added a third-place finish at the Waynesburg Jacket Tri-Valley Classic on Sept. 8, with Gundacker recording an 84 to help power his team.
He shot his best round of the season, a 78, at the Kent State Golden Eagle Invite, to guide his team to a second-place showing.
Geneva returns to competition on Monday, Sept. 28, at Grove City Fall Invitational.
Kellan Smith, Junior, Albright
Smith is off to a sharp start for the Lions.
A competitor for Albright’s ‘B’ team, Smith has consistently shot under 80 this fall.
He played his first match as a Lion on Sept. 1 at The Northampton Cup, firing a 75 to finish in a tie for 14th place. Smith was back in action on Sept. 6-7, carding a 79-75-154 at the Dickinson Invitational.
Smith most recently competed on Sept. 11-12 at The Berkleigh Challenge. There, he recorded an 80-79-159.
Albright returns to action on Monday, Sept. 28, at the Moravian Invitational.
Cross country
Bella Ruefle, Junior, Millersville
Ruefle opened her cross country season with a bang, exploding for both a Top 10 finish and a PR in the 5K.
Competing at the LVC Dutchmen Invite, Ruefle burst to the finish line 19:44.33 for ninth place.
The Marauders return to the field on Friday, Oct. 2, at the Paul Short Run.
Maddie Ruefle, Freshman, Millersville
Ruefle has competed in both of Millersville’s invites this season.
She kicked off her collegiate career on Sept. 5, running a 5K time of 23:36.4 for 79th place at the LVC Dutchmen Invite. Ruefle was back in action for the LHU Open/Invitational on Sept. 26 and posted a 6K time of 27:19.0 to take 165th place.
Ella Swart, Freshman, Mount St. Mary’s
There has been no shortage of races for Swart in her first season of college cross country.
She’s raced in three events, starting on Sept. 4 when she ran a 5K time of 23:03.2 for 28th place at the Mount St. Mary’s 5K Duals. Swart competed again at the Stevenson Invitational on Sept. 18, completing the 6K race in 26:47.6 for 27th place.
Swart most recently ran at the JMU XC Invitational on Sept. 25. There, she finished the 5K race in 23:22.8 for 17th place.
The Mount will take a short break before returning to the race paths on Oct. 17 for the Aubrey Shenk Invitational at Gettysburg College.
Will Campbell, Junior, Lock Haven
After two seasons at Hagerstown CC, Campbell is ready to test his skills at the Division 2 level for Lock Haven.
He’s taken on three races this season, starting with the Dolan Duals on Sept. 4. There, he clocked a 5K time of 16:51.7 for 19th place.
Campbell bumped up to the 8K distance for the Kutztown DII/DIII Challenge on Sept. 12 and the LHU Open/Invitational on Sept. 26. He posted a 16th-place time of 27:31.8 at Kutztown, before trimming that time down to 26:46.4 at his home course for 84th place.
The Bald Eagles hit the road on Friday, Oct. 2, for the Paul Short Run.
Field hockey
Kenzi Monn, Junior, Wilson
Monn, a 5-foot-2 defender, has played in every game for Wilson this fall, totaling 215 minutes of playing time.
She most recently took the field on Sept. 24, logging 26 minutes in an 8-0 loss to Alvernia.
The Phoenix (2-4) return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 29, with a road game at Hood College.
Olivia Dingzon, Senior, Wilson
Dingzon, a 5-foot-4 defender, recently saw her first action of the season.
She took the field on Sept. 19, playing for 50 minutes in a 2-0 loss to Batten University.
Esports
Laine Wilkinson, Sophomore, Penn College
Wilkinson returns for Penn College to compete in Valorant this fall.
Equestrian
Leyna Ribner, Senior, Seton Hill
Ribner, a Waynesboro native who went to Commonwealth Charter Academy, is set to return to Seton Hill for her senior season.
The Griffins open their campaign on Sunday, Oct. 4, when they host the Seton Hill Show.
Swimming
JB Bonner, Sophomore, Saint Mary’s College of Maryland
After picking up three wins during his freshman campaign, the 5-foot-11, 140-pound Bonner is ready to go on the attack again this season.
A butterfly/backstroke/IM specialist, Bonner will be aiming to build upon his success from last winter, a season which saw him take sixth in the 100 butterfly in 54.35 at the Atlantic East Championships.
The Seahawks open on Oct. 17, when they host their alumni meet.
Maddy Stoops, Junior, Shippensburg
Stoops, a backstroke and freestyle specialist, and the Raiders kicked off their season on Sept. 23 with a 151-111 loss to Kutztown.
She competed in the 50 backstroke (31.63) and also served as a member of Shippensburg’s 200 medley relay (2:05.70) and 200 freestyle relay (1:53.77) teams.
The Raiders return to the pool on Oct. 2 for a tri-meet at home against Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg.
Brenner McIlquham, Junior, Mount St. Mary’s
McIlquham was inactive for The Mount’s season opener at the Charm City Relays on Sept. 26.
He is coming off a season that saw him compete at the ECAC Winter Championships and take 34th in the 50 freestyle (21.89) and 35th in the 100 freestyle (48.58).
Mount St. Mary’s returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 10, when it hosts American University.
Eve Phillips, Sophomore, Mount St. Mary’s
After landing dual podium finishes as a freshman at the ECAC Winter Championships, Phillips will be aiming to take another step forward this season.
At the ECACs, she claimed third in both the 50 freestyle (23.76) and 100 butterfly (57.80), while also finishing 12th in the 100 freestyle.
Phillips was inactive for The Mount’s season opener at the Charm City Relays on Sept. 26.
Owen Shockey, Sophomore, Mount St. Mary’s
Shockey was inactive for Mount St. Mary’s season opener at the Charm City Relays on Sept. 26.
Delaney Stains, Sophomore, Lock Haven
Stains is back for Lock Haven after a freshman year that saw her land three podium finishes.
The last time Stains, a freestyle/IM specialist, competed in the pool, she recorded top-eight finishes in both the 200 freestyle (3rd in 2:32.91) and 100 breaststroke (6th in 1:37.48) in a dual meet against East Stroudsburg in January.
The Bald Eagles open their season on Friday, Oct. 9, with a home meet against Millersville.
Brenna Naddeo, Senior, Frostburg State
Naddeo, a freestyle specialist, is expected to return for her senior season, but we are still waiting for Frostburg State to release its roster to confirm this.
The Bobcats, who opened their season on Sept. 26 at the MEC Relays, return to the pool on Saturday, Oct. 10, for a road meet at Wheeling.
Joelle Blake, Senior, Hood
While Hood has not yet released its roster for the upcoming swimming season, Blake is projected to return for her senior year.
The Blazers open their season on Saturday with a dual meet at Gallaudet.

Dougan has made the cheer roster at Mount St. Mary’s.

Tyler Thomas, Senior, Indiana Tech
Thomas, a Barebow competitor for Indiana Tech, was inactive for the Indiana Open and State Outdoor Championship on Sept. 6.
The Warriors return to action on Nov. 21-22 at The Great Indiana Gobbler Shoot.
Brianna Triplett, Senior, Indiana Tech
Triplett, a Waynesboro native who went to Cornerstone Christian College Preparatory School, has been inactive to start the season.
