Gardening tips from 2026 Almanack

HAGERSTOWN, Md. — The rainy weather may bring some gloomy feelings to residents, but their gardens couldn’t be happier. Here are some great tips for our green thumb community from the pages of 2026 Almanack.

Don’t throw away those banana peels!

“Using banana peels is a simple and effective gardening hack for your rose bushes. The peels are rich in potassium and other important nutrients that roses need to thrive. Chop the banana peels into small pieces and then, bury them a few inches deep around the base of your roses. As the peels break down, they will release nutrients into the soil. This will help promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms. Additionally, banana peels can act as a natural pest deterrent.”

Too much water or just enough?

” Most gardens need about 1 inch of water per week, but factors like heat, soil type, and plant variety can change this. Check the soil moisture and water deeply rather than giving light, frequent sprinklings.”

Baking soda used in the garden? Your tomato plants say yes!

“Sweeten your tomatoes by using baking soda in your garden. Start by mixing one tablespoon of baking soda into nine square feet of your garden bed before planting. This helps lower the acidity in the soil. As the baking soda absorbs, it creates a better environment for your tomato plants. You might notice your tomatoes tasting sweeter and less tart.”

Think outside the box while planning your garden, here are some suggestions.
“If you’re short on space, vertical gardening is your new best friend. Try planting climbers like cucumbers, beans, or peas on a trellis or a sturdy support system. Not only do vertical gardens look beautiful, but they also allow for better air circulation, reducing the likelihood of fungal diseases. Consider building or buying shelving for smaller potted herbs. Lean old pallets against a fence to grow a variety of herbs and strawberries. It’s a huge space-saver and makes harvesting super easy.”

Use whatever tools you have handy for planting new seeds.
“Planting new seeds is a must-learn skill for any gardener, but it comes with the long-winded task of spacing them out to the correct measurements as well. To save time and ensure you get the seeds sewn to perfection, you can use a mini muffin tray from the kitchen to help out. Once you’ve prepared the soil for the seeds, take the muffin pan and press it down gently. You’ll be left with ready-made holes that have been evenly spaced, so all you have to do is push the seeds in, cover them slightly, and water.”

Gardening is one of the most relaxing pastimes a person can have. Plus, with the rising costs of groceries, growing your own herbs and veggies can help your bank account. It just takes a little sweat, a little patience, and some tips from the The Hagerstown Town and Country Almanack.  LocalNews1 has partnered with The Almanack to bring you a story every Monday taken from current or past editions. Readers may purchase their own copies by following the links.
