Washington County primary election results

Polls closed at 8 Tuesday night for Maryland’s primary elections, and the results are in. Campaigns for Washington County’s contested races have been in full swing for nearly a year, with some seats seeing several candidates hoping to have their name on November’s general election ballot.

Incumbent Gov. Wes Moore took 87.8% of votes to be the Democratic nominee for governor, over Eric Felber. Republican Dan Cox received 45.2% of GOP votes, defeating runner-up Ed Hale.

Maryland’s 6th congressional district saw a high-stakes race between Democratic incumbent April McClain Delaney, and former 6th district representative, David Trone (D). April McClain Delaney turned out victorious with 43.7% of votes. In the Republican congressional race, Robin Ficker won with 42.6% of votes, just over Chris Burnett (R).

In Maryland’s General Assembly, Incumbent Delegate for District 2B Matthew Schindler (D) will yet again be the nominee, against Republican Sean Flaherty, who ran an uncontested race to be the Republican candidate. Schindler won 64.78% of votes over Ocewana Baker, who received 35.22%

In district 2A for Maryland’s General Assembly, democrat Brandon Thompson received the majority of votes at 50.11%, though fellow democratic candidate John Leonard will also appear on November’s ballot. Incumbent republicans William Wivell and William Valentine will be up for re-election in November as well, defeating Dianna Palmer (R) for the spot.

The race for Washington County Board of Commissioners proved to be in high demand with 17 total names running in either party. Three of eight democratic candidates informally withdrew from the race weeks prior to the primary election, leaving the five names who would win the nomination. Jonathan Fish, Les McIntosh Sr., Teri Pailen, Lara Shepherd, and Dave Williams will be the democratic nominees for the Board of Commissioners, each earning 13-20% of the vote.

The GOP end of the Board of Commissioners race saw nine total candidates, with incumbents leading November’s ballot. Incumbent republicans John Barr, Randy Leatherman, Jeffery Cline, and Charles Burkett will each be up for reelection next vote. Dan Young, receiving the second-most GOP votes under Randy Leatherman, will be the fifth republican nominee in November.

Just two Republican candidates campaigned for Treasurer of Washington County to replace the current Matt Breeding. John McElroy took 56.28% of votes, defeating Seth Wilson. McElroy will face no democratic opposition.

The State’s Attorney race came down to a close call between Gina Cirincion (R), and Adam Grievell (R). Adam Grievell won by a dime with just 18 more votes than Cirincion, Grievell will also face no democratic opposition in November.

Current Sheriff for Washington County Brian Albert (R) won his nomination over Chuckie Johnson with 68.55% of votes. Junior McLeod for the democratic party ran uncontested and will face Albert for the role of Sheriff in November.

Seats on the Board of Education, although a nonpartisan race, had 7 candidates running for 3 spots on the ballot. Pieter Bickford, took home the most votes at 20.49%, with Linda Murray just behind him at 18.16% of votes. Robin Merchant-Spickler won the final spot on the ballot, just .12% ahead of Mike Guessford.
