Greencastle wins first state baseball title in record-setting 14-inning thriller

2026 Greencastle-Antrim Blue Devils Varsity Baseball

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Nolan Sullivan lined a walk-off RBI single through the left side of the infield with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning Friday night, lifting Greencastle-Antrim to its first state baseball championship with a 6-5 victory over DuBois Area in the longest title game in PIAA history at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

The Blue Devils (23-3) captured the crown in a game that lasted 5 hours, 4 minutes and surpassed the previous PIAA championship-game record of 13 innings set in 2025 by North Penn and Cedar Cliff.

Greencastle, which lost 9-7 to Huntingdon in its only previous state championship appearance in 2000, finally broke through Friday night.

The Blue Devils rallied from deficits of 3-1, 4-2 and 5-4 before finally securing the championship.

DuBois (21-5) appeared poised to claim the title after taking a 5-4 lead in the top of the 14th inning. Trey Wingard reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on Mason Dinkfelt’s RBI single.

Greencastle answered immediately in the bottom half.

After an out, Mason Mellott doubled to right-center. Collin Flynn then reached on a right-field error that allowed Mellott to score the tying run. Andrew Weaver followed with a walk, and a wild pitch moved Flynn to third and Weaver to second. DuBois intentionally walked Camden Rakaczewski to load the bases before Sullivan delivered the game-winning hit.

Greencastle finished with 10 hits. Rakaczewski went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI, a run scored and four walks. Weaver reached base seven times, going 1-for-2 with five walks, a hit-by-pitch, two runs scored and three stolen bases. Mellott finished 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Bryce Davidson added a double and a triple.

Dinkfelt paced DuBois by going 3-for-6 with a double and five RBIs. Wingard went 3-for-7 with a triple, a double and three runs scored.

The teams traded runs in the first inning. DuBois scored on Dinkfelt’s RBI single before Weaver was hit by a pitch, stole third and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

The Beavers took a 3-1 lead in the third inning when Dinkfelt lined a two-run double after a single and a double put two runners in scoring position.

Greencastle cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth when Manny Brookens singled and later scored on Mellott’s RBI single.

DuBois pushed its lead to 4-2 in the seventh on Dinkfelt’s sacrifice fly, but the Blue Devils responded in the bottom half. Weaver walked and Rakaczewski doubled him home before Rakaczewski later scored the tying run on a balk.

Neither team scored over the next six innings despite numerous chances.

DuBois loaded the bases with one out in the 10th inning, but Greencastle escaped the jam. The Blue Devils stranded the bases loaded in the 11th inning and left the bases loaded with no outs in the 13th before finally breaking through in the 14th.

Greencastle used three pitchers. Jackson Bostick allowed three runs in three innings before Rakaczewski worked six innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits while striking out four. Avery Horst earned the victory after pitching the final five innings, surrendering one unearned run on five hits while striking out four.

A 38-minute injury delay halted play in the top of the 14th inning after Greencastle first baseman Landon Bishop fell into a camera well while making a foul-territory catch. Bishop was taken from the field by ambulance.

The Class 5A championship was the sixth and final PIAA baseball title game of the week. Earlier Friday, Dock Mennonite won the Class 1A championship and Bermudian Springs captured the Class 3A title. On Thursday, Southern Columbia won the Class 2A championship, Indiana Area claimed the Class 4A crown and Neshaminy captured the Class 6A title.
