Two girls volleyball teams from the Local.News coverage area — North Hagerstown and Greencastle-Antrim — are both in the midst of deep postseason runs.

The Hubs had a big week, which began with taking out Frederick 3-0 to win the CMC large-school championship. Seeded No. 1 for the MPSSAA 3A West Region I Tournament, North Hagerstown punched its ticket to the final with a 3-0 win over No. 4 Tuscarora. The Hubs will face No. 2 Linganore on Wednesday in the title game.

As for Greencastle, the Blue Devils found themselves with their backs against the wall in the District 3-3A championship game on Thursday. Trailing 2-0 against undefeated Middletown, Greencastle won three straight games to complete a 3-2 comeback. The Blue Devils will be moving on to the PIAA Championships.

While the train rolls forward for area volleyball squads, the postseason dream has come to a close for North Hagerstown’s boys soccer squad, which finished on the wrong end of a Cinderella story in the opening round of states. Facing No. 8 Mount Hebron, the No. 1-seeded Hubs lost a 3-2 heartbreaker. Earlier in the week, North Hagerstown conquered Tuscarora 2-0 in the MPSSAA 3A West Region I title tilt.

Soccer season is also over for the Smithsburg girls, who fell 4-1 to No. 1-seed Brunswick in the MPSSAA 1A Region I final.

Finally, the cross country postseason came to an end in Pennsylvania, and is just starting to heat up in Maryland.

The PIAA Class 3A Championships saw Chambersburg’s boys land a Top 10 team finish, with Liam Kirkpatrick nailing down medalist honors with a 19th-place finish in 16:20.

Smithsburg’s cross country teams both had sparkling showings at the MPSSAA 1A West Region Championships. The Leopards’ Michael Wynkoop (16:32) and Cora Gentzel (20:13) both won their respective races, leading Smithsburg’s boys to a second-place team finish and the Leopard girls to a team championship.

North Hagerstown’s boys and girls nailed down runner-up team finishes at the 3A West Region meet. The Hubs’ Lauren Stine ran away for victory in 18:24 in the girls race, while teammate Walker Mason took second in the boys race in 16:24.
