WAYNESBORO – A public hearing to gather input on the possible rezoning of open Waynesboro Country Club land for housing development is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at the Washington Township Building, 11798 Buchanan Trail E. A vote on the rezoning by Washington Township Supervisors will immediately follow the hearing.

Township Supervisors said the public hearing is to gather comments from the public regarding amendments to the Code of Washington Township and the Joint Comprehensive Plan of the Borough of Waynesboro and Washington Township.  The public hearing is a state-mandated requirement before a vote to modify these documents.

The meeting’s purpose is to obtain comments regarding a proposal to rezone an area off Mentzer Gap Road on property owned by the country club.  A review of the proposed ordinance, resolution, and map that depicts a proposed dwelling indicates the development would have road access on Mentzer Gap Road and would be situated behind current homes on West Park Court.  The proposed Resolution identifies a change in zoning from Agricultural to R-1.  R-1 designation means the proposed area of land can be used for low-intensity residential.

Township Supervisors intend to consider both the ordinance to update their comprehensive plan and resolution to change the zoning of this property immediately after the public hearing.  If passed, the ordinance would take effect five days after the vote, and the resolution would be effective immediately.  Public comment should be made by attending the hearing and offering support or opposition to the zoning change.

The proposed ordinance, resolution, and Exhibit A (map of property) can be viewed on Washington Township’s webpage, in person at the Washington Township Office, or by paying for copies through the township office.
